Just thorght i might post a help topic for linking to other sites.

Some times you might have to post a link to another page or site that has a massive URL or Address like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/HYUNDAI-Key-Ring-Chain-Fob-Amica-Sonata-Tucson-i30_W0QQitemZ260445461934QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Car_Parts_Vehicles_Automobila_ET?hash=item3ca3c25dae&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A1|66%3A2|39%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

even though this works fine, the above link contains 238 characters can cause confusion and panic among the non-computer savvy.

Solution, try copying the link in to www.tinyurl.com.
this site takes the larger link from above and converts it to a smaller more likable link like this:

http://tinyurl.com/mvjslw

It's easy, just copy the link in to the Enter a long URL to make tiny: box and click the Make TinyURL! button. Copy the TinyURL link it gives you then past it here and voilą.

It's that easy and your friends will think you're cool. So give it a go next time you need to put a link here in the forums biggrin

I hate tinyurl and other URL-shortening services.  I'd much prefer to know which website I'm going to without having to click and hope.

To each their own though...

Sometimes you can't avoid using sites like tiny url. I can't count the number of
times i've clicked on a link in a forum that doesn't work because it is broken from
being too long

Yeah I agree, although I also hate tinyurl.

However, if the poster of the huge URL enclosed it within the [url]...[/url] tags, all would be ok Smiley

Which was ironic because we were at a bus stop at the time.

Here's also another method:

[url*=link]text[/url]

Example:
Ebay

i acually remembered how to do this the other day yay me
but i was thinking so why doesn't the insert hyperlink thingy in the forum just work, then i realised i was using it wrong perhaps

so  testing the big fat ebay link from before

edit
nah its just not what i'm used to. some forums after you highlight some text and click on 'create hyperlink' it will create a script or give  apop up that you put the link into to give you the clean little link, you can do it here similar though. highlight the text you want to use as the link. click 'insert hyperlink' put the equal sign after first URL then straight after the equal sign but before the bracket you paste your link. thats it. same as Hemmi shows

Thats what I was missing Hemmi, when I made the original post. I tried href= and even tried that inside "code tags"

Original post corrected, thanks.
