Hi everyone. This is quick intro to all as my wife recently bought an i30 1.6 CRDI AUTO comfort, which we've had for a few months. She's generally very happy but we have had a few issues, one of which I researched on the forum (smoky exhaust on start-up) and the other problem is one which I'm hoping to get some help from you guys on after I've trawled the forum (really harsh ride, and a bit of thumping sound from the rear). In spite of the problems, we really like this car. I hope we can contribute (as well as ask for help) in the future

My mate told me that I just don't understand irony.
Which was ironic because we were at a bus stop at the time.

I don't notice much smoke (maybe just a little) unless I forget to wait for the glowplug light to turn off before I turn the engine over. I still forget sometimes.
Thumping sound from the rear - what's it sound like? Mine thumped the day I got it, I unscrewed the rubber bump-stops on the hatch door and that fixed it.
A few people have complained of suspension noise though.

thanks for the warm welcome - much appreciated You guys already helped a lot with our 'smokey-startup problem (I got lots of tips just by visiting the club forum), although the dealer ducked and dived until we stopped complaining and the problem kind of settled down to a few minor puffs (which we can live with).

Yeah Lorian - you've got to keep remembering that glowplug light. Strangely I bought a new Madza 1.3 diesel (which also has a glowplug indicator) and the dealer never mentioned it and I never noticed it in the manual. It's only 3 years later when we bought the i30 that I found out about it. I've no idea if it's caused any damage to the Mazda

Our works Van glowplugs stay on for 10 seconds+ when it's cold, so the i30 one is pretty quick.

Welcome Townrower
I have seldom if ever bothered to wait for the Glowplug light to go out in my two years with an i30 diesel although I do live in a slightly warmer climate...

Hi from sunny Scotland !! you should let your wife out of the boot now and see if the noise stops Hope you see the funny side I had a ford focus once and starting from cold it smoked like a fish and chip van. Changed the glow plugs and that helped
