Jolting when changing gears.

Hello to you all...

I have a 2011 manual Diesel 1.6L T/diesel that i bought brand new at the time.

Last night my car started jolting when i changed gears. The engine wasnt COLD COLD but semi warm after i had driven it 10km along a highway then turned it off for an hour to have dinner. Ambient temperature of atmosphere was about 23C. I am telling you all this detail because i have read these forums enough and didnt want people to be confused....hehe.

What i mean re: jolting is that when i first turn on the engine and get going i changed gears and the revs dropped suddenly to idle and then obviously made the next gear jolt hard as the revvs were out of 'sync' so to speak. ALSO when this is happening if i take my foot off the accelerator the car wants to slow down and FAST.... it jolts to a near stop. (when driving at a slow speed). It is an intermitant issue that only started 24 hours ago. happened this morning too. I took it to the dealer today (my next service is early march 2013) and the foreman came for a ride for me in the car....and guess what.. NO ISSUE OCCURED! arrrg! lol

They guy said that i should wait until it either happens more often OR when the engine light comes on so the computer logs the fault.

What do you guys think? have i explained myself well??

Just to recap:  Only really happens for the first 30 seconds after turning the car on (but not every time), i had the aircon on most of the times, the engine was both hot and cold, it rushes but to idle revvs, it wants to slow the car up harshly ...

ANY IDEAS?

ask me what ever you like...

My father (who is also a mechanic and a good one too *renowned in SE QLD for VW repairs) said it might be a THROTTLE SENSOR or ThROTTLE SOLENOID or something....???

Did your dealer hook her up and look for a dtc? A pending dtc could have been logged & stored without the CEL coming on.

I asked several times for the computer hook up thing to be done... declined every time as he said that without the engine light being on its doubtful anthing was logged., He said wait for it to be more frequent so he could feel it OR until the engine light is on. he will check computer when service is done in March,...

If it's a self-clearing ("pending") dtc it may never illuminate the CEL, so your dealer (imho) is just delaying things and taking the easy way out.

If you lived close to me I'd hook up my bluetooth dongle and expend the 2-3 minutes of effort required to check for any codes.

I'd be checking the Throttle Positioning Sensor as well as fault codes.

Just an update.... THe car starting doing it again :( Damn thing!! Jolting and carrying on like a child! lol Once it gets up to a higher speed and a higher gear it settles but i can still sometimes tell when i suddenly take the foot of the throttle that that engine wants to stop the car! odd

I'm not sure what this means. When the "throttle" is closed then no fuel is given to the engine. The only thing that can happen is to slow the car by engine braking.

What I mean is: When a normal car (petrol or diesel) is giong along a carpark (example) in say second year then you take the foot off the peddle (throttle now closed) the car will slow down smoothly but steadily.  When I (ME) do it slows down with such force that it feels like someone has applied the brakes. THEN when i accellerate from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd the revvs go from say 3000RPM down to 1000 within a second and thus are out of sync with the next gear...causing a jolt. Very annoying and now CONSTANT!

My father says it could be a solanoid OR throttle body sensor :( but no engine light comes on and probably therefore causing no code to be logged...

The only solution to this problem is to have a technician with you, so you can demonstrate. Otherwise, if there isn't any logged fault codes, they'll quite happily tell you it's all ok and "go away". Perhaps you can make an arrangement with the service dept to allocate someone at short notice to assist you.  :'(

I think I remember Lakes saying that our diesel has a safety feature that is a sort of throttle valve to clamp the intake air-flow when stopping the engine to prevent run-on by burning traces of lubricating oil or if there is a fuel metering error or some such. Diesels do not meter the air-flow when running but instead run WOT and meter the fuel only.

Could this shut-down clamp be activating incorrectly and snapping the air-flow closed prematurely which I expect would cause greater engine braking?

Just a guess.

The first time this issue came up i went straight to the Keema Springwood Hyundai service centre. They sent me out with the foreman. NOTHING. It would not present the issue. DAMN! haha

Then yesterday morning (Monday) it started again and is doing it full time now. I cannot get out of work again to do it as i took ages last time. This weekend i will try them..... Service (45K) in under two weeks

I had a similar problem on my manual diesel. Jerking as the throttle was opened/closed. It was down to the Neutral Gear Sensor which (I believe) had been damaged during a fuel filter change. Apparently the ECU drops into a tickover mode at low revs instead of a drive mode. Hope this helps.

It was down to the Neutral Gear Sensor...

Neutral Gear Sensor?  That's a new one.  :confused: :question:

The GD model has one as part of the ISG system. It needs to know the car is out of gear.

Took the car to the dealer... IT WOULD NOT DO IT PROPERLY. It did it but not convincingly enough! SIGH!!! So they have suggested i leave the car with them for two days and i get a hire car. I was affraid id just get a 'sorry cannot help you" but instead i am HAPPY about them giving me hire cars etc.... :) More new end of the coming week....

Just found this, frustrating for sure.
well hard to say what it would be. is this a GD or FD model?
also there is no engine speed control on Diesels useing the amount of air they take in, they control there speed from the amount of Fuel they get and just have a full bore of air. but on my two FD model CRDi they have a vacume controled butterfly that shuts off air supply when motor turned off.

But the i30 CRDi uses fly by wire throtle so no cable or mechanical linkage it's programed electronic so it must control the fuel?
they might need to have the right scanning equipment to plug into  the port, then know all the normal read out's & drive the car with it pluged in to spot the problem. but i'm just guessing.
hope they solve it.
how long before this problem started did you fill your tank with fuel?

I think it started mid week which is days after i put in new fuel. It was on and off for about two or so weeks.... i fill up every sunday regardless howmuch i have in the thank....
