Back when I haunted Rod Irving Electronics I considered adding a NIG to my stable of kits such as Musicolour light chaser, music track voice canceller, stereo amps, crystal radios, FM mics, you name it.
However, I remained sceptical. Now when the sun is setting at just the right angle and a ray cuts across the room I can see just how much dust is floating around me. All speculation of the health effects of NIGs aside, I think I'll revisit putting one together out of a simple chain of capacitors and diodes, just to eliminate the suspended dust.
Does anyone have any experience, opinion or old NIG they'd like to share? :D

Sorry, Gonz. I thought this was an English site.....
-
on the infomercial channel there is a product call the oric air purifier,it doesn't use filters.
-
Aw, c'mon, Jamie, every word is English!
(This is turning out like my workplace where I have to speak slowly to aircrew. )
OK, here's a link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_ioniser) link for context - in English! :D

I think that's what got me thinking about this.
Correct about the filters. the ions 'boiled off' a needlepoint at the end of a voltage multiplier chain spray out into the air and bond electrostatically with dust particles, which then are attracted to the nearest grounded object like a wall or floor. Hence no floating dust.
I wouldn't spend money on the oric when you can build one very cheaply, though.
-
You want clear air, I'll show you clear air, watch this space for an educational vid.

We are but simple creatures. Speak slowly, and use little words.
BTW, do you know why RAAF Pilots get paid Flying Pay? It is because they get extra Flying Leave, they need the money to spend on their holidays.

:argh:   :whistler:

Oh really? Care to explain why I was constantly approving huge chunks of leave for my submariner subordinates?
BUT... this looks interesting:
Naval Aviator
On a carrier, the Naval Aviator looks over at the Catapult Officer ("Shooter") who gives the run up engines signal by rotating his finger above his head. The pilot pushes the throttle forward, verifies all flight controls are operational, checks all gauges, and gives the Cat officer a brisk salute, continuing the Navy/Marine tradition of asking permission to leave the ship. The Cat officer drops to one knee while swooping his arm forward and pointing down deck, granting that permission. The pilot is immediately catapulted and becomes airborne.
Air Force Pilot
We've all seen Air Force pilots at the air force base look up just before taxiing for takeoff and the ground crew waits until the pilot's thumb is sticking straight up. The crew chief then confirms that he sees the thumb, salutes, and the Air Force pilot then takes off. This time-tested tradition is the last link in the Air Force safety net to confirm that the pilot does not have his thumb up his ass.

SETTLE DOWN. :whistler: its Easter holidays. :snigger:
-

Submariners are a different breed (as you are no doubt aware). They get submariners allowance for the same reason as aircrew get flying allowance. Extra leave requires extra money (I used to get 35 working days leave per year, down to 20 now). :disapp:

:offtopic: Hey, I want an ion generator! :clapping:
(I never go off topic.)

:thanx: :whistler:

professor Julius sumnermiler.

"The atmospheric pressure does the work."
Ah, the mammories!
-
LOL!
that orec air purifier is a bit of a gymick!! the ex's parents had one, i couldnt tell any difference! *agent walks off into a glass sliding door* WTF WHO PUT THAT THERE...
-
 Well, despite several KV at the needlepoint, it virtually uses no power so I figure it's worth trying making my own. :goodjob:

:happydance: :goodjob2:

I download these and watch them as saved files because my browser doesn't always run them. I just watched it - thanks, Phil, very good! :happydance:
-
My fan has one built in and I leave the ion thingy on all the time. No idea if it actually does anything.

The test will be the amount of dust suspended in the treated space - but not always easy to observe.
-
go for it mate, and pics!! im quite envious of people with electrical know how...
i know the basics, ie how to figure out resistor values, simple wiring (like putting another engine in a car) and the likes but not the hard core stuff!
-
Soon as Easter is over I'll drop into Jaycar and buy a bunch of diodes and caps. I'll post as I go. :goodjob:
-
i thought you said dildo's. :snigger: i really need my glasses updated. :-[

I had one of those Negative Ion Generators.. But it ended up in a cupboard collecting dust :whistler:

It was supposed to be a joke.. :whistler:
Negative ion generators job is to collect dust

:p
-
Mmmm ... my nerd sense is tingling!
The gennie's job is to ionise dust and have it collect on grounded surfaces.
The probe does gather dust over time and is made more efficient with a wipe ever few months.
7/10 for you, Dazz :goodjob:
-
here comes the ion man. :snigger:
-
If I repost, does that make me Ion Man 2?

Perhaps sucking it, which could be disastrous if confused.

Woo Hoo I already have a huge NIG,it's called my lounge room and all the furniture and pictures in it,they collect dust extremely well :whistler:

Sorry Rick, it's 48 meg & I dont know how to make it smaller.
If anyone has any format / resolution advice etc. Please let me know and I'll replace it. It's currently a WMA file. Should it be something else.

Get that free WinXD software I posted in the Bargain Corner, run your file through it (in Youtube mode) to create a 23mb mp4 version, then upload that to youtube (or back to your skydrive)..

shambles did get to watch the original, just had to wait for it to download, we used to watch Professor Sumdamillar(SPL) religiously when we where kids, very educational show, could you imagine a show host striking up a Fag today for a show and in front of Kids,he was brilliant
-
That's the beauty of youtube - you get the codecs right up front so it can stream and render the clip as it's downloading :D
-
Sorry Gonz but at the risk of going further :offtopic:
This makes interesting reading (even if there are conflicting DOB figures in it..) He was a mate of Einstein they even shared the same hairdresser :laughter:

So they see his right or left thumb, what is he doing with his other one :whistler:
Air Force pilots only fly fixed wing aircraft, so if he (or she, but if chicks were meant to fly, the sky would be pink) is showing one thumb to the ground crew then his/her brain is overloaded, so therefore the other thumb will be doing nothing.
BTW Rick, nice riding gear. Are you now a MAMIL?

OK, so I paid Jaycar a visit after my radio broadcast last Saturday and, soon after, soldered up $15 worth of diodes and capacitors to create a voltage multiplier that will take our 240V to 7.5KV. Now it's soldered to a power cord I cut off an old analog TV set and I'll try not to burn down the house in a test run this weekend.

Wouldn't it have been better to use the cord off an old Iron?

1. The old iron could still be useful
2. Lots more extra analog TVs around now :whistler:
