Hi all,
Long time reader and love the forum. I am having an issue at the moment with my 2008 (MY09) Diesel i30 5 spd manual where it seems that if i accelerate out of an intersection with a good amount of throttle position, the zircon cuts out and blows warm air. It behaves as advertised whenever i am not accelerating sufficiently. Any thoughts? I know that some cars with smaller engines do that so that all power is available for the engine, but can't find any info elsewhere. I also know my land cruiser has a coolant temp switch that cuts off the zircon above a certain temp, but my i30 seems to only do it at extended throttle pedal positions? And i never noticed it last summer!!
Thanks in advance;
Ben

I've noticed my 2014 GD (1.8 pet) does this as well, pretty clever IMO. I assume its normal behavior? The difference in tempreture is hardly noticeable and only lasts a few seconds in my car.

Never noticed it on either of mine, both 2011's one climate controlled, the other manually controlled and I have been known on rare occasions to give my two cars a real good poke from an intersection.

Hmm, well it seems that i might have to get the refrigerant levels checked as it is very noticable when it happens and i get that damp smell from the vents..... maybe i am just too observant (read "Paranoid"). Thanks all  for your responses.

Is the fan running with a/c turned on?

Never noticed in our 2008 with manual aircon.

When towing the caravan it sometimes requires the pedal-to-the-metal uphill for several kilometers in 30+ºC so I can promise you I would notice if the a/c didn't work....  :D

I think this is pretty normal for lots of cars - my 2010 diesel (65k) also switches the aircon off under brisk acceleration. Maybe the switch/relay is faulty?
A couple of times on long trips a few years ago the aircon stopped working and I blamed a faulty switch/relay this for this problem.  When you stopped the car and re-started it seemed to reset and everything was ok.  In this case the the aircon turned completely off (although green light stayed on).

More recently on a long trip the aircon seemed to lose efficiency (down by 50%) and this also seemed to correct when the car was switched off and re-started. I can't work this one out.  I can understand the first problem with the aircon cutting out completely but this one doesn't make sense. It it needed re-gassing I think it's performance would just gradually decline and a re-start would have no effect.

Can the pollen filter become block and reduce efficiency?

Thanks,

BC

A blocked pollen filter would only reduce the amount of external air passing through the vents. AFAIK, on recirculate, the air should be at normal quantity as it it sourced from inside the cabin and doesn't pass through the pollen filter.

Not sure if you have the auto AC function or the manual temp function, but remember if on auto, the AC will cut out as the desired temperature is reached.

Manual & set on coldest setting.

OK, the only sure way, would be to have the gas & temps tested by a specialist service centre, or Hy.
