It is a myth that the hats they wear which have corks dangling on the end of strings tied to the brim is to keep the flies away.

The reality is that they are scared of a bit of rain and the hat brim directs the rain down the strings and away from the face from where it drips harmlessly onto the floor. The corks are there to keep the string straight.
