I think around here if you leave your outside lights on then you are welcoming, if no outside light on, then you are not participating.

I'm not fussed one way or the other, if the kids are happy doing it, then I see no harm.  It is no different to the other Hallmark Holidays IMO.

It was OK in the UK as a way to interact with families from 30 different countries, much like the Christmas Windows evening roster we had. Here we find it pointless and far too American / commercial for our liking.

The front security camera caught some kids a few years ago who egged and flour bombed the neighbours car over the road, gave the evidence to the neighbours and cops and the parents of the children ended up having to pay for the car to be fully repainted as the egg was on the car all night and baked in the next mornings sun which destroyed the paintwork.

I don't think it's all that dangerous, provided as happens evrywhere I know, thst adults go along as part of the group.

But I'm more concerned about the association of strangers and sweets which can leave the wrong impression with very young kids.
