Hi folks

Please forgive my introduction to the i30 crew being a question........ 

I've had some years of trouble free driving from this great little car until this week - it started making an odd noise.

I've traced a noise that occurs when making a quick change of direction to a loose bracket under the dash hitting the steering column assembly.  Trouble is I don't know what it's for or what it should be supporting!

YouTube vid link below shows the bracket. Any clue what it's for or what it's supposesed to be fixed to???

Yeah bought the car used - wow they have 5 year warranty do they?

I'm primarily a motorcyclist so 6 months to 2 years is the norm for me.

As well as moving laterally, does that "bracket" move medially?

I've viewed your vid quite a few times and the more I see it, the more I think it's a clasp that should be pushed backwards/downwards (ie, away from your hand) and refastened to some magical position. More pics could be good, but as always the best advice is to let the warrantor deal with it.

I've got the same impression, Steve. Looks like an unfinished replacement job to me.

Photos are not easy to get under dash!

No it is held on the steering column mount with two bolts which appear to have come loose causing the movement. If tight the strut would be immovable.

I'm thinking it could be there as a rebound stop for the clutch pedal if it you slipped the foot off when depressed. Should possibly have a rubber buffer on the lower end?

Booked in At the dealer Friday - we'll see what they come up with. Yes it still has warranty

If it's designed to interact with the clutch pedal, is your cruise control behaving properly?

Is it an extra which was put in by pevious owner.

Such as a bracket for additional controls!

So mystery solved and it's been sorted by the local dealership.

Despite the appearance that it should have been secured to something at the lower end, it is a standard fitting designed to prevent the clutch pedal from rebounding past the point that it disengages from the master cylinder.

Bolts securing it at top had worked loose - must not have been tensioned correctly in factory.
