So why doesn't Microsoft have a "9" in their number system?

Because 7 8 9.

So why doesn't Microsoft have a "9" in their number system?

In the far East and some other countries - notably Japan - the number 9 is regarded as at best unlucky - and at worst - the precursor of death.

Microsoft are possibly aware that trying to market Windows 9 in some countries would be a death knell for it.

If we're going to get grammatical then I suggest "So why doesn't Microsoft have a "9" in their number system?" needs treatment. :whistler:

For the nerdy types, some people think this is why they moved straight to Windows 10
:link: Why did Microsoft skip Windows 9?

Quote
Microsoft dev here, the internal rumours are that early testing revealed just how many third party products that had code of the form

if(version.StartsWith("Windows 9"))
{ /* 95 and 98 */
} else {
and that this was the pragmatic solution to avoid that.

That being said, I'm an Apple guy... but I do like toying with the latest MS stuff. I've been running it in a VM for a few days and it's not bad.

Win10 has been in internal testing as Win9 for nearly 8 months which is why the preview is running so smooth, it's only a very recent decision to change the version number to 10, it could be as Alan mentioned earlier that in some countries 9 is regarded as bad luck so they moved it up one :undecided:

Due to the length of the internal testing and smooth behaviour of the test preview we'll likely see a release in around 6 months, using mostly all the code from Windows 8 with some small changes and tweaks has enabled a quicker release cycle.

Anyone currently using version 8 will also be receiving the upgrade to 10 for free so my little birdies tell me :D

I just loaded this into a VM now, and so far so good.

I like that they have gone back to the roots and gone back to the standard Windows Start Menu and not those horrible tiles. The tiles that are still on the side are meh, but I am still seeing if I can remove them or minimize their impact.

Pretty nippy too on 2GB of RAM that I have allocated to it

I'm sure the popular third party Classic Menu will be updated to fix the residual bits. :winker:
