Hi All,

I've  just had my car in for its 4th annual service [50,000 miles] yesterday although mine has just covered 34,000 miles. Total cost including the MOT was £302, which certainly wasn't cheap.

However, before I took it to them, I listed a few 'niggles' for them to look at and fix. One of them included a rattling/knocking noise coming from the front end somewhere. After their investigations, it turned out to be an exhaust flexi hose that required to be replaced. Lucky for me this was replaced under the Hyundai 5yr warranty as the price they quoted on the job sheet was £216  :head_butt: This on top of the £302 would not have been good  :blubber: :blubber:

Now, this is the 2nd consecutive year my car has raised an issue at the time of the service. If you remember, at last years service I mentioned a grating noise with my brakes which turned out to require new rear pads and discs at 27,000 miles at a cost of £279. I disputed this with my dealer and had to fight Hyundai [UK] before we struck up a deal that suited both parties [I have logged the full episode elsewhere on this forum].

As next year will be my last year of the 5yr warranty, I am a tad concerned :whistler:. That is now twice I have put the car in for standard services only to be presented with what I would call huge 'Extra Surprises'. There is no way I would have known about these hidden problems until it went into the garage by which time it is all too late. [That'll be £xxx I'll just remove from your wallet Sir].  :'( :'(

I'm extremely grateful for the 5yr warranty but in all the 30+ years of driving different makes of cars [VW,Vauxhall,Ford,Citroen] this is the first car I have owned where I have been hit with extreme extras.  I'm beginning to wonder if Hyundai give this warranty because you will need it ............  :-[

What next and what happens once the warranty expires ?

P.S. I Googled 'Exhaust Flexi Hose' and found one for a VW/Audi/Skoda which was selling for a mere £25, so someone is making a killing

trev  with this sort of warranty and if they think their looking after you, they are banking on most people to trade their cars within the five year period, they only need fifty percent to do this, because new buyers mostly within twelve months that are happy with their cars will highly recommend others to buy one,at which many do,then the cycle repeats itself, very clever marketing, this is why many other companies are following suit.

Yes Hyundai know how to charge for their spares

To make sure book the car in say 2 weeks before warranty expire date.

Any warranty related issues will then be covered.

Yeah, but what if you want to keep it longer than the 5 years. That was my intention as it has such a low milage and everything 'Seems' to be working fine.

I see you point Trev but still believe the i30 is generally one of the more reliable and economical to own small/medium cars on the market.

Many of these relatively minor things that might go wrong can be fixed by an independent outside warranty for the same or less than other brands using 3rd party parts.

I think if you go on VW, Ford or Subaru forums just to name a few you will see more and dearer to repair faults being mentioned on a regular basis.

Have any warranty issues corrected b4 5 years as already advised. After the warranty runs out, you will be free to have any repairs done at "normal" rates. If in fact, anything needs doing at all. The current prices are pretty much in line with other makes, too. Servicing is always a killer.  :fum:

As Phil has said when your warranty runs out you can get your repairs done at normal rates and as you pointed out you could obtain a flexi hose at a good price . If any problems you may be able to supply parts at a lower cost and find a reasonable mechanic of your choice. It will certainly be a lot financially better than purchasing a new car. I guess we all come to that time period when we all have to make the decision as to keep the car or trade in . Personally I would tend to keep the car if the mileage is as low as yours. Resale value on any car in my opinion is not good and if I have not been having major problems and don't hate the car I would personally keep it, having said that it is a personal choice and I am sure  you will come to the right decision.

Pretty  much any exhaust repair specialist would be able to replace a flexible pipe.
It's not a big deal.

I used to fit a flexible section myself to my rally cars.

Mate, just out of interest, do you feel confident that the dealer is not trying to rip you off?

Dealer prices are always so high they feel like a rip-off and in my opinion are difficult for them to justify, although they usually roll out the same excuses such as special equipment and higher overheads...

trev I'm with you,I bought ours with the intentions they would be the last cars we have, like I said in another thread mine are here till they die or become financially prohibitive to repair, the last car we bought, was almost new, just eighteen months old,we still have 23 years later and yes still roadworthy and drivable,if I get the same milage out of Bruce and Cyril I'll be wrapped, our old car has traveled a mere 820,000 K's

Not always.....

I had work done on my old accent at the hy dealer at a lower price than an indie.

Reason was they had the special gear to fix it whereas the indie would have either bought the gear or hired it or sent it to hy dealer to fix!

Maybe I've been spoiled, my Indy always told me if he didn't have the kit or knowledge to do a job.

I've got a Getz, well out of warranty. In the warranty period, they replaced the rear brake cylinders. And that was the extent of the repairs done to the car. The gear knob has just broken, the top bit with the numbers fell off. Shocking. But that's it since we have had it.

I wouldn't be too concerned.
