Back when I haunted Rod Irving Electronics I considered adding a NIG to my stable of kits such as Musicolour light chaser, music track voice canceller, stereo amps, crystal radios, FM mics, you name it.

However, I remained sceptical. Now when the sun is setting at just the right angle and a ray cuts across the room I can see just how much dust is floating around me. All speculation of the health effects of NIGs aside, I think I'll revisit putting one together out of a simple chain of capacitors and diodes, just to eliminate the suspended dust.

Does anyone have any experience, opinion or old NIG they'd like to share?  :D

Aw, c'mon, Jamie, every word is English!

(This is turning out like my workplace where I have to speak slowly to aircrew.  )

OK, here's a link link for context - in English!  :D

I think that's what got me thinking about this.

Correct about the filters. the ions 'boiled off' a needlepoint at the end of a voltage multiplier chain spray out into the air and bond electrostatically with dust particles, which then are attracted to the nearest grounded object like a wall or floor. Hence no floating dust.

I wouldn't spend money on the oric when you can build one very cheaply, though.

We are but simple creatures.  Speak slowly, and use little words.

BTW, do you know why RAAF Pilots get paid Flying Pay?  It is because they get extra Flying Leave, they need the money to spend on their holidays.

Oh really? Care to explain why I was constantly approving huge chunks of leave for my submariner subordinates?

BUT... this looks interesting:

Naval Aviator

On a carrier, the Naval Aviator looks over at the Catapult Officer ("Shooter") who gives the run up engines signal by rotating his finger above his head. The pilot pushes the throttle forward, verifies all flight controls are operational, checks all gauges, and gives the Cat officer a brisk salute, continuing the Navy/Marine tradition of asking permission to leave the ship. The Cat officer drops to one knee while swooping his arm forward and pointing down deck, granting that permission. The pilot is immediately catapulted and becomes airborne.

Air Force Pilot

We've all seen Air Force pilots at the air force base look up just before taxiing for takeoff and the ground crew waits until the pilot's thumb is sticking straight up. The crew chief then confirms that he sees the thumb, salutes, and the Air Force pilot then takes off. This time-tested tradition is the last link in the Air Force safety net to confirm that the pilot does not have his thumb up his ass.

Submariners are a different breed (as you are no doubt aware).  They get submariners allowance for the same reason as aircrew get flying allowance.  Extra leave requires extra money (I used to get 35 working days leave per year, down to 20 now).   :disapp:

 Well, despite several KV at the needlepoint, it virtually uses no power so I figure it's worth trying making my own.  :goodjob:

My fan has one built in and I leave the ion thingy on all the time. No idea if it actually does anything.

The test will be the amount of dust suspended in the treated space - but not always easy to observe.

go for it mate, and pics!! im quite envious of people with electrical know how...

i know the basics, ie how to figure out resistor values, simple wiring (like putting another engine in a car) and the likes but not the hard core stuff!

Mmmm ... my nerd sense is tingling!

The gennie's job is to ionise dust and have it collect on grounded surfaces.

The probe does gather dust over time and is made more efficient with a wipe ever few months.

7/10 for you, Dazz  :goodjob:
