replacing alternator belt

Good question. The old one is pretty stuffed all the rubbers cracked and pitted and stuff. Its just good insurance, if the new one fails prematurely between Brisbane and cairns and theres no a replacement belt to be found, like waiting a week in a fleabag motel. You have the old one in the back just in case, to get you home. You wouldnt squeeze a new one in the back bending them that up can damage them. But to shove the old one back there is okay.

But my old FD i30 is now 7 years old and the belt looks like new.  no visable issues etc

In an emergency you can always use  tights or nylons./
