Title: Drive Away? What does it exactly mean?
Post by: Hi30 on February 28, 2009, 17:02:05
Hi guys, today I've  signed the contract of buying an Nissan X-trail 08 and they have the driveaway deal across the entire range on 08 models. However when I got home , I checked recomended retail price of the 08 models, at carsales redbook valuation and realised that they (the car dealer) mistakenly put down the 09 model recommended retail price in my contract, which is $1000 more expensive than the RRP of the 08 models (there was an increase of $1000 for the 09 model recently by Nissan). My understanding of drive-away is that I don't have to pay stamp duty fee,Registration, dealer delivery etc..nothing else but the recomended retail price. But that's just my understanding and I'm not %100 sure. I just wonder if they have to minus $1000 from my contract if I ask them to. The funny thing is that they gave $1000 more for my trading vehicle than the Redbook value figure. Any help is very appreciated, thank you. My apologies for the none i30 related topic.

The driveaway price is the total price you agree to pay the dealer to take the car.

If you have signed a contract and paid a deposit, you will find it hard to get the dealer to lower the price for you (ie he won't and is not obliged to).

How much did you agree to pay?  If the price is fair then I suggest you just accept it as a lesson for the future.  If the dealer gave you $1,000 more for your trade in, then waived dealer delivery, stamp duty and registration costs, then maybe you have already got a good price, notwithstanding the calculation written down on your contract.  That is, if the dealer had included the lower price for the 08 X-Trail, you may have got less for your trade.  If you are worried about it, you can always go and talk to your dealer.

With dealers I have found it is best to do plenty of research and not buy on the spot when you first start talking prices with them. Go away, do your calculations and work out whether it is a good deal or not, then go back and talk again.  Others use different techniques as discussed on these forums.

Drive away is usually the price including dealer delivery, stamp duty etc etc. It is not nessecary the actual recomended retail price of the car. They just advertise it as a total no more pay drive away price. If your drive away price was only $1000  more than the recomended retail price of the 2009, then I would say you got a good deal.

Dealer Delivery, stamp duty etc can add up to $4000 to the price of the car.

So the 2009 model would actutally be up to $4000 more than the RRP price you are looking at on carsales does not include these delivery charges etc etc.

Is the drive away price exactly what was stated in the advertisement?

According to the nissan site. The x-trail is 32,490 rrp. So it should be around 36,490 drive away i would say (not knowing nissans delievery prices cant be sure. Add on that metallic paint. so its close to 37k. This is for the entry level base model. ANd a manual. Auto would be up to $2500 extra.

SO if your was a manual entry level X-trail and less than about 37K then you are on the money.

If not I would ring the dealer and ask them why they put the 2009 RRP on the contract for a 2008 model car.

Hi Morias, I havent put any deposit yet, I paid $39000 for the 08 ST-L,CVT model. But when I checked the Redbook valuation, it was supposed be $38000. Also I checked at carsales, all dealers sell it for $38000 for 08 models. With my trading, they gave me $1000 over the Rebook figure, but again I think it's might be because my car is in excellent condition, and has low km,it also has paint protection, rust protection...etc... I was really stupid of me not to check around for prices before I bought it. But I will call them next week to ask them minus $1000 if they don't want to, I think can still withdraw my contract because it's subject to finance approval. Thank youfor your reply.

Hi brawler, from Nissan ad, they didnt mentioned any particular price for their Xtrail 08 models. They just said ' Driveaway deal is now across the entire Xtrail range' .Thanks

is the $39,000 your drive away price? If so I would say that is an excellent deal.

The $38,000 is the RRP. The $39,000 that you are seeing for the 2009 is not Drive away.

Drive away advertising, and drive away prices are always higher than the RRP. THe RRP for you car in 2009 model would be 36,490 + 2500 CVT + 495 metallic paint. $39,485. Then add $4000 for the drive away price. $43,485

So in fact by only paying 39,000 drive away you are getting the 2008 one for $4,485 less than you would pay for a 2009 one. or about 10% discount.

The carsales redbook valuation does not take into consideration any costs for delivery, registration etc etc. This is what is considered the "Drive away" costs. The price when new on that carsales site for the xtrail states $37,990, on top of that is Rego, dealer delivery, stamp duty etc etc.

But to be honest, when it comes down to it, are you happy with the price you paid. Would you be willing to pay $43,485 for a 2009 one?

Just a thought but you could ring another dealer 1st thing 2moro and ask if

(a) they have any 08 models available in your preferred spec and how much the drive away price would be... or

(b) if they don't have any 08 stock left how much drive away for the same spec in a 09 model

They don't like doing this over the phone but will if you are insistent...Good luck

I would expect the drive away price to be the bottom line figure, i.e. RRP plus any additional costs such as accessories/road fund/local taxes etc.

Off this price you will haggle for a decent PX or discount.

blawler, yes $39000 is the drive-away price in my contract. I know the drive-away price is only applied to the 08 models which is $38000 RRP price so I'm not interested in paying extra for 09 models. Last year, I bought my Subaru Impreza when there was a driveaway price promotion and I was able to get another $700 off of their RRP, so I believe driveaway price is usually the RRP.

I've been thinking to do exactly as darryl suggested, I will call a few dealers on Tuesday, since tomorrow is public holiday over here in Perth. Thanks everyone for your replies.

I was right :) Called a couple nissan dealers today and the price away-price is $1000 less than what they put in my contract. So I called the saleman explained to him about the situation, he talked to the manager (they called Nissan Australia) then called me back and apologied to me about the mixed up, and said 'it was a genuine mistake' because they gave me the 09 models' price. Anyway, I'm very happy with the purchase, just hope that it's going to be a good reliable car like the i30. Thanks very much everyone.
