2012 i30 1.8 GD Auto Fuel Test - 91/95/98 - How do you compare?

I drive 100% in city urban, about 200km ( 124 miles ) per week. Road is up and down with moderate peaks.

I drive quite conservatively ( wish 18yr old me could see me now ) and using the putting into neutral method when possible. ( heard this conserves petrol - not sure and will test without this method soon )

I thought to get a proper test I would need to fill up a few times. I will do the same for other tests where possible to get a good reading

TEST 1: Unleaded 91 petrol

Result: Travelled 1332.8 km 8.1L/100 ( Multiple refills )

Conclusion: Pretty happy with that. It was sitting at 8.3 for while but over the last week dropped down to 8.1. I wonder if because the weather has warmed up a little and drier maybe less friction.. Honestly don't think that makes a huge difference.

I think that this doesn't help fuel economy with modern cars.

If you take your foot off the accelerator whilst in gear then the fuel to the engine gets cut totally. Though if it is in neutral the ECU detects it and feeds tickover fuel in to stop the engine stalling.   Or so I am told. :)

What size tank do you have ? as that is nearly double the amount of km's you should be getting :confused: perhaps I am reading wrong and your test was over multiple tank refills :undecided:

I get 780kms out of my 1.6ltr using roughly 50lts of fuel.

Diablo you could be right.. Will continue this hopeful :) method and then try it without down the track..

CraigB yes this is over multiple tank refills.. I thought it would be a true test...

I have a 40 litre tank btw.. You get 780.. That is very good.. I think I get about 550.. Can't confirm this...

I didn't think there was a 40ltr :undecided:

Mines a 50ltr and the driving is a mix of city and freeway, I've done one trip down south ( long straight roads ) and got 830km's which I was happy with :)

Maybe that is the freeway driving that helps you.. Great figures..

Now I'm confused I'm sure it's 40ltr.. Will check the manual tonight and report back :)

8.1LHK is quite a result.  What does the trip meter say is your average speed?

Doesn't putting the car in neutral stop some pump from running that keeps the tranny lubed or something?

tla yeah very happy with that.. Average speed was 32km/hr

I'm no mechanic but yes it could do more harm.. Would love someone that knows confirm the above..

The whole neutral thing could be just the wrong thing to do..

He says multiple fills so disregard the total kms. The average was calculated over more than 1 tank.

Please do NOT put the trans in Neutral. Not sure exactly when you are doing that, but is is dangerous to do that on the road whilst moving. Diablo is correct, you actually use more fuel this way.  :fum:

Danger, danger......

No control over the motion of the car  and engine not acting as brake whilst slowing down via the gear change.

Plus if you have to accelerate quickly there is a delay, although only millisecond, whilst selecting correct gear.

Ps
Today i tried both coasting in neutral and down gear change.

I noticed when i slow down via gears the read out of the mpg is up near the 50 mpg.  Whereas if coast in neutral it is around the 25 mpg

2 killed same spot 21st August and a near miss yesterday. All freeway travelers must use this intersection to get to the city. In peak hour, traffic is banked up 500 metres.

An auto trans specialist told me a long time back, all the wear & tear is when you first put in D or R but was along  time back

Can't see why, at idle revs, the trans isn't working hard at all.

What first popped into my head over the brakes not working was why the driver did not go down the gears and or put into neutral, pull the hand brake on and turn the engine off!

Ok by turning the engine off you loose the air brakes but they are not working anyway and the power steering but as going in straight line no need to turn wheel....

Now i have never driven a truck so i guess someone will post that this can not be done yet this is what i was told to consider when i was learning to drive in a car some 45 years ago...

No, it's a hideous piece of engineering, but much improved from the original course. Trucks with 5 axles or more are supposed to do 60 kmh from the top (Crafers), to the bottom, that would require the correct use of gears. There are sever arrester bays full of stones to stop runaway trucks, for some reason, this clown didn't use the last Aug 21 accident, so this will just reinforce the argument for change. I get the heeby jeebies every time I get stopped at that intersection. :fum: :fum: :fum:

Seen this yesterday,I was just dumbfounded and a lot of comments,along with some from myself,to get to that stage and still trying to continue when there is safety alternatives the driver could have used,but no he continued,should have his tickets pulled and possibly jailed.

Noted ALL - chucking it in neutral is a bad idea... This will not happen anymore :)

That's why we have forums like this.. Love it..

Not that the average or total kms is my concern it's the fuel efficiency that I'm worried about

Nothing wrong with what you did. CraigB was wondering how you could travel so many km's to obtain your figures, but that was over more than 1 tank, that's all.

Some owners do not reset their average for many '000's of km's. This gives them an average for any length of driving. It is probably a good way to obtain the true indication of the car's fuel consumption because it would take in all types of driving conditions over a large time frame. Regardless of how you do it, as long as you start your test with a fully brimmed tank, and end your test in the same way, the results will be accurate.

Personally, I prefer to brim the tank at each fill and reset the average, so I can see how my driving style can be improved.

BTW, some members have joined Fuelly, which is a website to record individual fills. We have no affiliation at all with the site, purely optional, of course.

Hey Phil No1 - Yeah I'm not too concerned about average kms but more the fuel economy.. But I am travelling similar route each week and I think it is a good comparison...

Wanting to share this info with other i30 owners..

Been using 98 and getting some interesting results.. To be divulged in a few weeks.. Stay tuned...

I have just returned from a trip to Tasmania, travelling around 900km from Mt Gambier to Melbourne and back and 1355km in Tasmania travelling on a lot of very slow winding up and down roads for a total of 2255km I used 185litres of 91 octane petrol. That's 8.2l/100km . I have a December 2013 manufactured i30 Premium automatic, total km's now on 12664km.
