What sort of tablet is it? With some persuasion and plastics remodelling you could probably fit an iPad mini in the console area of a GD i30, not sure about the FD's, etc.

If the job becomes a headache - a paracetamol might be the right choice of tablet.

I have often thought it would be good to have a big screen internet-connected device that could be used as an onboard computer.
Is this what we're thinking?
I know that WA police cars have a big screen mounted in the centre but it tends to block the air vents which I don't want.

For those in Australia, I would suggest checking out our road rules before fitting any kind of "Visual Display Unit" on the dash....  :)

Try rule 299.....

Makes you wonder then why factory/third party fitted head units that can play videos etc are not considered a VDU/etc. I know there are 'locks' that stop video playback on those devices when the car is in motion, but those regs quite broadly state that you must not drive a vehicle if a VDU/etc is installed.

At least that is my interpretation, I'm happy to be corrected.

Here's the law as it stands in Victoria....  :)

Quote
299 Television receivers and visual display units in motor vehicles

(1) A driver must not drive a motor vehicle that has a television receiver or visual display unit in or on the vehicle operating while the vehicle is moving, or is stationary but not parked, if any part of the image on the screen—
(a) is visible to the driver from the normal driving position; or
(b) is likely to distract another driver.
Penalty: 10 penalty units.
Note
Motor vehicle is defined in the Road Safety Act 1986, park is defined in the dictionary, and vehicle is defined in rule 15.
(2) This rule does not apply to the driver if—
(a) the driver is driving a bus and the visual display unit is, or displays, a destination sign or other bus sign; or
(aa) the vehicle is a motor bike and the visual display unit is, or is part of, a driver's aid, and the driver is not holding the visual display unit in his or her hand; or
(b) the vehicle is not a motor bike and the visual display unit is, or is part of, a driver's aid and either—
(i) is an integrated part of the vehicle design; or
(ii) is secured in a mounting affixed to the vehicle while being used; or
(ba) the visual display unit is a mobile data terminal fitted to a police vehicle, emergency vehicle or an enforcement vehicle; or
Note
Police vehicle, emergency vehicle and enforcement vehicle are defined in the dictionary.

(c) the Corporation has, by notice in writing, exempted the driver from subrule (1).
(3) For the purposes of subrule (2)(b)(ii), a visual display unit is secured in a mounting affixed to the vehicle if, and only if—
(a) the mounting is commercially designed and manufactured for that purpose; and
(b) the unit is secured in the mounting, and the mounting is affixed to the vehicle, in the manner intended by the manufacturer.

Examples of driver's aids
1 Closed-circuit television security cameras.
2 Dispatch systems.
3 Navigational or intelligent highway and vehicle system equipment.
4 Rear view screens.
5 Ticket-issuing machines.
6 Vehicle monitoring devices.

Note
Bus is defined in the Road Safety Act 1986.

That was very helpful, the stuff I found online didn't have any of the definitions.

KKOM,

I've just bought one of these from eBay - it replaces the centre storage box on the Aussie FD. It is yet to arrive, but I believe the opening is 7", which should fit some tablets (like iPad mini). My plan is to modify it to fit an old TomTom I have.

This would be nice if you have an i30 GD, and would be harder to steal then a tablet out in the open
