White smoke on start up after glow plug change

Hi everyone.

A few months a go I had the glw plugs changed in my 09 i30cw because it was often blowing white smoke on start up.

When the glow plugs got changed it continued to blow white smoke on startup, but eventually it stopped doing it for a while.

When the white smoke would happen the engine would run rough for a moment, then run as normal.

I'm wondering if one of the blow plugs doesn't have a good connection and isn't powering up. I'll check the fuse in a moment to make sure that's not the issue.

I'm just wondering if it could be something else? Do injectors cause this when they are on the way out?

I think I might need to take it to a diesel mechanic for its next service. Because I have no idea

You might want to read from the start or a number of the users messages back up the tread to get the picture - apparently this was near new vehicle and didn't seem to be giving fault indications.

So I would be suspicious of it being something to do with the glow plugs - or what drives them, being it sounds like it got better after the change before returning... bad connection maybe?

Not saying it is your problem, but I had something similar in my FD i30 CRDi and it ended being a problem with the mass airflow sensor. My car had a retained code. After replacing it, it has had no more white smoke + rough idle on startup.

Just thought I'd give an update to my issue.

I took your advise and looked into the MAF sensor being the possible issue.

I removed the MAF and noticed it was quite dirty and oily. I bought some of that spray specially for cleaning the MAF. I gave it a good spray and allowed it to dry.

I put the sensor back in 2 week ago and so far, the rough idle has virtually disappeared.

Over the last 2 weeks I think only on one start up there was a cloud of white smoke, which I think is OK given that our new GD diesel has the odd smokey start up.

I'm giving it another few weeks before I can safely say the problem has been eliminated.

I might still replace the sensor if they're not too expensive.

I had a problem re-smoking after replacing glow plugs. The reason was dirty (carbon) contacts in the relay.
Relay remove and easily opened the lid and gently clean the contacts (eg. nail file nail his beloved). You can then contacts a little spray any electro-contact agent. In my case, the problem never came back.

The contacts INSIDE relay (not in socket relay) of glow plugs. In my I30 (2009) the relay is located inside the smaller black fuse box in the engine compartment.

It looks like my quick fix with the MAF might not be the issue. For about 3 week the car started normally, only with a split second of showing it might start rough.

Now it back to normal, and seems worse.
I'm just going to have to take it to someone who knows what they are doing. We head off to NSW with the camper in mid Jan so hopefully I can get it sorted out before then.

It runs perfectly fine after a few seconds with no loss of power or torque. It just doesn't sound happy at start up.

Just came across this, before i sold my last 2011 6 speed CRDi, i notice white smoke on start up but it always ran good so i did not worry about it.
I always thought Glow plugs were just to start the Diesel motor, so if motor starts fine i would not think Glow plug. i've seen glow plugs go before & motor would not fire, took air cleaner top off sprayed start ya barstard in & it fired up. guy who was driving truck just had to leave it runing all day then get new glow plugs.

Don't know the Hyundai system, Cruiserfield would, but in most modern diesel engines with glow plugs they continue in "after glow" mode until coolant is up to running temp. (keeps the emissions happy)
So the plugs in such engines are still powered for some time. Usually the system will drop the voltage to the plugs as coolant temp rises.
Saw a new shape I-30 blow bucket loads of white smoke on start up recently at 1770. Owner could care less and left it idling for ages while they packed the car. Nice for the rest of us campers.

No, Daughter's 08 I30 did the same thing, only on startup. Once running it was fine, no smoke at all. All injectors replaced at AU$2000. Fortunately, warranty.

Great! Just got a 2k bonus from work... God I hope it's not that... But with my luck...

Where am I best to get an honest opinion? I live in Seaford, Vic - willing to travel to a decent diesel mechanic if I have to. Car is of course out of warranty so don't want to be dicked around.

Do I take it to a dealer?

So hard to know if you are getting an honest opinion, unless you get a personal recommendation. I think Rusty has been fairly happy with his dealer, but not sure where you are in relation to him.

Quick update:

Spoke to a diesel injection specialist and have the i30 booked in for a diagnostic on Friday. It's not looking great, straight up he said with the k's on the car (135,000km) it could possibly be injectors. But they'll do a full test on Friday to confirm.

Have many people with high mileage Diesels needed to have their injectors replaced?

400k is considered high kms for a Diesel. However as stated, we had a set put in @ <> 70-80 K's. Hope this is not the same for you.

Thanks mate, I'm not holding my breath but I think it might be going that way... They mentioned a whole lot of other little things that could cause it and asked a lot of questions about the car. I'll hopefully have the diagnostic report tomorrow. I dropped the car off this evening so they can see what it does on a cold start.

I have had the issue since 100,000km, but have been slack getting it checked. It's just getting a bit annoying now.

Update:

Car had a diagnostic done yesterday, fuel pump and pressure looks good and functioning OK.

Replaced battery because it was dropping as low as 8.6 volts when glowing, normal drop should be around 10 volts. Glow plug light on dash shows for 3sec, glow plugs keep glowing for 16sec once light goes out. Didn't fix problem.

Car is getting the injectors removed tomorrow and tested on Bosch testing equipment. Will find out tomorrow if an injector/s are on their way out.

Test is costing $600

If injectors need replacing they'll waiver the $600 and charge $2200 for work (which includes injectors)

I hope there is some solution to the problem. Injectors have been ordered just in case so I should have the car back tomorrow Afternoon either still at square 1 or the problem fixed.
