Hello all,
I'm new here so please be nice. 2011 i30  1.6 diesel

I started to feel a lack of power and loss of power accelerating a couple of weeks ago,
So in garage who didn't find any codes as no engine management light,  put down to bad fuel( Tesco fuel)  and fuel filter, so IV had new fuel filter and fuel additives put in to try.  But they mentioned I have turbo wear which is the next step,(sounds expensive)
This hasn't solved the issue after driving it over 200miles as it keeps loosing and then gaining it back intermittently.

Any ideas and could the turbo be the problem?

Thanks in advance

Hi mate, Welcome.

As a matter of interest how many miles on the clock?

Turbos are 95% mechanical devices, so if worn they dont tend to recover, unlike Electrical devices.

So, at this stage, I think blaming the turbo is a bit of straw clutching.

However, bad fuel is where I would start. Did they pull the fuel pump out of the tank? If its strainer is clogged with black 'bug' from bad fuel you will get the symptoms you describe.
Additive will kill the bug, but wont clean the tank.
You can do the job yourself, easy DIY

Good luck let me know.

Okay,

Can you access the fuel pump under the back seats?
Got a friend looking at it later on.
Thanks

Update, it has done 62k miles.

Managed to get fuel pump strainer out and it's clear and looks brand new and tank is clear, doesn't look like a fuel problem,

Maybe it is the turbo? Poss injectors?

At 60k miles =100,000 km the motor and turbo are still like new.
We have members in Oz with that motor running fine at 300,000.  Assuming the engine has good oil and regular service, Turbos dont give much grief, @tw2005  changed one of his at about 350K ??

Its hard to judge from here, but how much power loss (%) do you have?

Regarding injectors, if one is failing you will hear and feel the motor running rough.

If its a major power loss it could be the vacuum line to the turbo.

any thoughts on this, tw?

Yeah, I'm curious to know how they determined Turbo wear? Is terribly noisey? Consuming lots of oil? Blowing heaps of smoke?

I'd be checking  piping and lines to the Turbo and intercooler.
When it lacks power is the motor RPM limited? Any indication lamps in the cluster lit when it drops? ESC , Traction Control?

Like @nzenigma  I think Turbo failure is unlikely with those low Ks if it's been regularly serviced

Hello again,

When I loose power it's more noticeable between pulling off and 2500rev. It's almost as if the engine losses compression or something. But when u give it more throttle it recovers and gets going again.
You can notice the loss by almost 50% maybe.
It's regularly serviced and been told there seems be alittle bit of friction at one point in the turbo fan inside,
No noticeable noise smoke or extra oil.

So should I be checking more pipe work maybe.

I assume that the  50% loss  up to 2500 rpm is intermittent, otherwise your workshop would still have it.
If the turbo is faulty it would affect higher revs also.
As tw was also saying, vacuum  lines need to be  checked. Take top cover off engine and look for cracks or loose connections on the thin rubber hoses. Same on large one going to intercooler. Small pipes go to a couple valves. WD40 their electrical connections. Check around vacuum pump RH side of engine.

Sorry, I'm not getting this "bit of friction" on one point of the turbo fan. Assuming it would have to be in the bushing / bearing. This would suggest excessive wear, maybe varnish build up and I'd expect noise.

I'm just skeptical, but I am wondering if there is a stuck or faulty  variable vane system so at lower RPM the Turbo is not producing boost but further up in the range it is.

It's vacuum actuated but you could move the mechanism and see if it's stuck I suppose.

I'm not terribly Turbo savvy myself but just throwing that out there

An update,

Not alot has happened due to illness and working away from home,

I still have the same problem but noticed in the morning when I start it up it acts ok at 16degrees and below 17 and higher it stutters still??

When it stutters I can turn the air con on, which solves the problem by changing engine timing or mixture's and I can drive it fine with the air con.
As soon I turn it off it goes back to the normal stuttering.

Any thoughts guys?

I'm waiting on a friend to help me with cleaning the egr out.

Thanks again in advance

re-read first post, now last.
verdict from afar, Turbo ok, EGR function at fault.
When did you last put cleaner through the system?
