Hi
I hope I have posted this in the correct place.
Be kind please... first post!

I have a very basic 1.4 petrol 2012 model just hit 70 thousand miles.
Well looked after. Serviced in house. Oil and filter changed about 500 miles ago. It was a mann filter used.

(Last car was a nissan k11 1.3 super s.. owned for 12 years and practically rebuilt body over that time until I could not spend another £ on steel!)

Jesse is nothing spectacular but has been reliable until this morning..

Im 5 weeks away from my due date on a mission to the recycling centre.
Chilly morning, jesse was a bit hesitant in the background but this is something jesse has ALWAYS had until she warms up.
Running on super improves it a lot and a good motorway run.

I did enquire with Hyundai dealer about the issue but was told they had never heard of it. They wanted £120 to put on diagnostics for 1.5 hours...

My partner has put it on diagnostic reader... no faults found.

So hesitation has just been part of jesse... just be gentle till she wakes up...

This morning she was the usual hesitant, I switched the car off at recycling centre....

Unloads stuff.. then she wont start.. fires then dies.. revs up but dies.

Tried again revved up moved her 25 metres... she dies...

Tries to start and what a clacky noise... died.. (I cringed... to my ears sounded like no oil... checked oil.. fine)
No engine warning light

So got the lads to push her out the way and rang my partner whom luckily has a recovery truck! (Apparently Il get the bill haha)

I consider myself not daft so didnt bother trying endlessly.to start her after the clanky noise incase I made things worse but described the events to my partner.

(A VW head whom has suffered at the mercy of tensioners failing in the past ECP specials)

He said it sounds like chain has skipped teeth...

Now then.. the reason Im posting here is to ask if this is a common occurance in the 1.4  2012 models (I believe im end of 2011 body)

Im shocked that such a thing is possible,
My k11 had a chain and it just ran forever and still does (engine)

I rang hyundai whom said never heard of it but no surprise there....

I really had liked Jesse but now Im completely devod!

She is on her way to a fellow mechanic to inspect...
Being pregnant I am not having it done here, it will do my head in!

Any pointers or hints would be greatly received.

I have spotted and read a few posts with similar issue however as always not many post back with an "end solution or result!"

Many thanks for reading.

I doubt the timing chain would have skipped a tooth though stranger things have happened, the fuel filter would be worth checking if it hasn't been replaced in the last few years, crank sensor could also be a suspect :undecided:

Thank you for your reply.
It felt like a fuel issue eg the way it just died after attempting restart until the clackety clink noise :scared:
Will check fuel filter & crank sensor.

Thank you

Who diagnosed for you?

I've read, can't recall but may be Europarts, that you can buy a kit for replacement.
  • 1.4 Petrol Active I'm no expert, so please correct me if

I must add here that im not a woman who doesnt do mechanics as such...

Iv worked with parts for over 13 years and rebuilt my k11 micra with my old man....

Iv asked on here as this new fandangled monkey metal is beyond logic for me....

I cant seem to find an online or written workshop manual for timing values
And experience on the brands of kits to buy is so mixed....

Nothing is built as it used to be and in all my time working in cars with my dad have never know  a chain to go...

From my reading its the usual all depends what day it was built...
Which is ridiculous.

Well jesse is home with her new timing chain kit fitted.
She is more responsive and seems smoother.

Thankfully due to not starting her and getting her recovered no major damage.

So yes people at 67 thousand miles regular service with castrol edge you do get the tensioners failing.

Which is shocking in my eyes.
