Help, my car is full of water.

Hi.

Well it actually started right after I got the car. One day I noticed that the carpet in the passenger side was soaking with water. As it was during winter, I thought that it was the girls that did tap the water and snow off their shoes before entering the car. So I put a towel under the rubber mat, changed it every week until it no longer was moist. When spring arrived and I changed the mats to the summer ones, I removed the towel.
A couple of weeks ago the car started to smell of wet dog, initially i blamed it on the airconditioning. Today I removed the carpet in the passenger side and it is soaking and molded. Of course I will take it to the dealer and it will hopefully be covered by the warranty.
But, this can be extremely difficult to fix as there is no obvious signs of were the water enters the car.

Do we have any experience regarding this problem, that might help solve mine?

/Jakob

Never had this problem myself with my i30 but I would be suspecting the AC of leaking.   Just a long distance guess of course

The air intake in front of the window screen, are the hoses all fully home behind the fascia?

Not good to say the least  :disapp: Have you had a windscreen replaced? Maybe they didn't seal it properly.

I do suspect it is the Aircon though, or more specifically a leak in the heater connections  :undecided:

I can't add to what has been said but it will be interesting to hear the dealer response.

My thoughts are,

- The Air cond drain pipe actually drains from under the driver's side floor well, presumably because the car is made for LHD.
On the passenger side for RHD, there is the battery, so no room for air cond.

- It won't be a leak from heater pipes, as there would be a corresponding drop in coolant level in the reservoir bottle in the engine bay, check when cold to see if it is below minimum.

- Although rare in this model, there can be water intrusion in wet weather from the windscreen. Very hard to check this.

This clearly is a warranty issue and I would require that all affected carpet be replaced and the floor well checked for any rust or degradation caused by continuous water exposure, especially where welds are present. I would ask the dealer to allow you to inspect / photograph the floor while the carpet is removed, so that there is a record of the condition of the floor. The reason for this is because Hy also warranty against rust and should there be any degradation it should be recorded and dated for your own protection in the future.

Update:

The water entered through the passenger door. This has now been fixed under warranty. The carpet i being dried out.
Neither me or the dealer believe that there will be any rust issues. Fortunately I offered the full dinitrol rust protection before the car was delivered.

And the car is wet again. No rain, no wasching. Back to the dealer tomorrow.
Taking into consideration that this will be my 7'th warranty issue in 22000 km's, I actually thinking about trading the d... thing in and getting me a used SAAB.

So if not outside in then does this point to the air con?

Well, there is a small amount of water under the car, so the drain i probaly ok. I assume that the dealer checked this the last time.

It has to be Air Cond, Engine Coolant, Excessive Condensation or someone has spilt fluid in your car. I can understand your disappointment with the car after such a short distance. Where else can liquid come from

The hopefully last update:

It seems like the water was leftovers from the first time. After being dried again, there has not been any further problems even though the Danish summer has provided plenty of water.

I went to the dealers yesterday in order to pickup some protection for the door handles. The lot was almost empty and it seems like Hyundai is having troubles keeping up with the demands. There is now up to 5 months waiting time for a  new car.

Did they say what was causing delays in obtaining new cars from the factory.

Ps glad to hear no more paddling while driving.

However, the downside is that your Meyer range is now drastically reduced. :head_butt:
