Title: Long crank on start and rough idle 1.6 L CRDi 2008
Post by: lydie93 on January 13, 2021, 01:51:51
Hey all,

I recently acquired a 2008 CRDi and have had a service on it (done approx 157k kms). Had noticed a few things prior:

First this was a significant whistle upon acceleration, this was determined to be a cracked intake hose to the turbo, was replaced and the whistle is now just faint, what I would assume to be normal for the turbo. Prior to replacement I noticed an intermittent shudder at idle after the car warmed up, this doesn't appear to be the case anymore but have only been driving it for a couple of days.

Second thing, although minor is a longish crank to start, and a rough idle (this isn't too bad and I'll be honest I don't have much experience with diesels so may be mostly normal? Hard to tell. For reference am in Australia and its the middle of summer, although I'm in melbourne so can get down to about 10 deg overnight still.

So I guess I'm trying to chase what this could be without having to go back to the mechanic, even though he seems decent. My thoughts are possibly dead glow plugs, or clogged injectors, is there a way for a relative novice to check which of these it might be?

Cheers for any help, let me know if you need any more info!

Remove glow plug power rail and measure resistance with a multimeter from the glow plugs contact pin to the engine. With those kms I would guess there are some dead glow plugs if they have not been changed.

Seems easy enough, I believe I have a multimeter lying around somewhere. Will report back

Don't believe that they would have ever been changed, not part of the regular service to check them here

My partner's car is 2011 and 208,000 miles. It also needs cranking for a few seconds to fire up, and the idle is rough for a couple of minutes. It does start eventually, even in the -4C weather we are having now. I'm pretty sure one or more glow-plugs have failed. My concern about changing them is that having been in for so long there is a risk of them snapping off, which may mean a world of pain to extract them. As long as the car starts, I'm inclined to leave them alone.

Testing them in-situ will at least confirm if they are faulty, and which ones are ok, so you're not trying to swap healthy ones. It's not like swapping out spark plugs.
