My original i30 now owned by my son.

Car went for mot yesterday and prior to test the garage noted 1 rear brake light out.

So they put a new bulb in.

Car passed......

Today while driving, son noticed dash cluster lights up when brakes applied.

Not lighting up prior to taking to garage.

My thought is either wrong bulb and or wire caught when rear lights refitted.

Anyone had this issue or any thoughts....

Cheers

Right, that's an original one. I think the bulb is where I'd start and I think they may all be dual filament on the tails. Weird setup but over here I think not all filaments used

Does the rear sidelight on that side still illuminate?

That bulb should be a stop-and-tail combo, if memory serves me right.

Just had phone call from son.

Sorted he thinks.....

Checked new bulb and only 1 silver blob on base.

Fortunately the old bulb was in the boot and that has 2 blobs.....

New bulb required.......... He'll be round mine in morning to "borrow" one of my spare bulbs i have in garage..

Hmmm... don't forget to let the MOT garage know how well they've done

Thanks mate, exactly as i had prescribed.

Single blob = single filament, 2 blobs = dual or twin filament

blob is solder.

Gone are the days the bloke in the garage was also the mechanic that knew his stuff

best bit is this place determines vehicle safety, roadworthiness etc  :crazy1: :crazy2: :spitty:

Easy fix when tracing back to the last change made.

Coincidentally, where the question was asked in another thread about converting incandescent turn indicators to LED DRLs (with that cool white/amber/off blinking), the suitably priced upgrade bulbs all seem to be dual filament, needing the bulb bases to be changed out as well. Otherwise, precisely this might be happening.

Ah, it's only a money raising venture disguised as a safety procedure.
Love the "blob bits",     :goodjob:

on my FD 2010 petrol CW, the running lights are dual filaments (all 4) and only the 5W filament is used. the brake lights are single filament 21W.
I thought at first, that they made this setup so if the brake light will burn, you can replace with the running light. but then, discovered that the brake light is single filament.
there is also different setups for the 2 pins on the side of the base. there straight pins (180 degrees apart) and other setups (different angles between the pins).
you can find the different bulbs here
