Went to Bolton BCC today but the only Ioniq they had in was in the showroom and they wouldn't let me take it out, for some reason

So, I'll be back there probably Tuesday lunchtime when the manager's car should be free for a spin.

My target car is the Ioniq SE Premium in Polar White with the optional 17" boots.

We have a few Iconic EV as company cars, I've yet to get to drive one, but they sure are great looking cars!

If you want comfort and a quiet ride - leave the wheels alone. 16" are fine.

You are initially going to notice that there is not quite as much grunt as the diesel - but push the gear lever to the left into sports mode - floor it - and you may get a surprise.

The motivation for going Hybrid is to get away from Diesel without a big economy penalty. My Niro - which has the same running gear as the Ioniq - has averaged 63.1mpg (4.5 l/100 km) over its first 7000 miles since I bought it in March. However - I drive for economy and not for outright performance. I have noticed,now that colder weather has arrived that economy is now looking more like 59 mpg overall with a 50/50 split between local and motorway. Having said that - it is about the same as the i30 diesels I have owned.

I have tried the Ioniq and it would have been my choice - but the low seating position was the killer. You aint as flexible when you are 80 as you were 10 years ago. My wife struggles to get out of a low car nowadays and so do I.

I'm probably more excited than Steve about his potential new car (I don't think Steve gets too excited..) Hope you like it mate, I'm sure you will. 

@Lakes It's a hybrid with a 1.6 GDI (non turbo) motor + electric. If  my las 4 cars hadn't been around 8 seconds or less (0-100kph) I would have been extremely tempted. That, plus they are dragging their feet bringing them to Oz!

When we left BCC we travelled approx 800 yards to the Toyota dealership, from where we previously purchased our three RAV4s.

Once the young salesman pounced I took great pride in announcing what I was looking for and where we'd just been.

Naturally, he gave the "Toyota developed the tech, the rest just follow" spiel.

Well, while seated in the TOTR Avensis Hybrid, I posed a few questions, like:

"Why isn't there a photochromic rear view mirror, instead of this throw-back to the 1970's lever?"

"You'll get that on the Prius"

"These manual seat controls are a little cumbersome. The Ioniq has front/back/up/down electric controls with memory"

"Surely there are at least front seat heaters?"

"Prius"

"The Ioniq has front AND rear heated seats with front seat ventilators. Does it have LKAS?"

beer that's why. my Toyota truck 12 years old still going strong. when your got a reputation you don't  have to prove it. Hyundai up and coming only been here five minutes, Toyota been here ten minutes. lol
they don't have to give you all the gimmicks . but resale seems to be ok on some models.
Hyundai are like Toyota was 50 years back.
Toyota give cheap servicing deals.

Problem with sitting still is that you let the others catch up. Sure they will make a lot of money in the short term, but it is too late to do something when you are being passed, and your employees have become fat and slow off a decade of sitting still.

I recall Steve's wife having quite a major problem with her Toyota RAV4 a while back.

Well I completed a test drive. Unusually, I was allowed to do this unaccompanied

The machine is totally impressive - very quiet in all engine modes apart from "sport", where the engine is reassuringly noticeable.

The Ioniq I took out is virtually identical to the model I had targeted, apart from having 15" wheels (I wanted the 17" wheels).

My test drive proved that I would be unwise to lose a bit of economy purely for the sake of bigger boots. I changed my mind about 17" wheels.







I had another look under the showroom model's hood while I was there...








So, with a bit of furtling and wrangling, we agreed a part-exchange price and completed my order.

Should have it in around 3 weeks

I am still totally happy with my Niro - especially now that I have installed some 30 mm spacers to raise the front seats to facilitate us old 'uns getting in and out of the car.
