What do you guys make of this latest hare-brained scheme?

The Treasury should increase tax or Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) for new diesel cars by up to £800 to encourage motorists to move towards lower emissions vehicles and improve air quality, a think-tank has advised.

As the owner of a petrol car (who lives near a busy A road and also suffers from asthma),  I agree with the idea - but doubt that £800 is high enough to be effective.  In the UK a high proportion of diesel cars are fleet owned and the drivers are to some extent buffered from such an increase.

I have seen alternative ideas about applying a much higher tax on diesel fuel - but this would bear heavily on lorries and increase food and other costs.

If Diesels are fitted with DPF's, aren't they cleaner than a petrol engined car. Why impose any further penalties. The cost of DPF fitment is already a component cost of the vehicle. Fair suck of the sav, fellas.
