This is from a friend who just had there bank account emptied after they paid a taxi driver with their debit card.
They wanted to pay with a credit card but he asked for another method because he didn’t want to pay the 4% visa fee.

On reporting to the Police they received some great advice that I want to share:

whenever you are asked to use debit instead of credit card for whatever reason, first fully enter in the wrong PIN.

If it is a counterfeit machine it will pseudo process the payment and produce a receipt.

An authentic machine will reject the PIN and request a “try again” of some sort.

Help spread the word, as the police tell me this type of fraud is becoming increasingly prevalent.

That’s one of the reasons I pay with my phone on all eftpos card systems where I can, the phone further protects the the payment by using its own encryption protecting the true identity of the card.

Good advice. I use a credit card that instantly draws from my balance but with all the (relative) protection of the credit system.

Wonder if he means it reduces the credit balance available from his limit

I was really lucky today.
I got a call from "Telstra" telling me they had noticed my internet was running slowly.
How lucky am I?
Telstra actually acknowledging a fault.

Yeah! Riiiigght!

BTW.
I'm not with Telstra.

Didn't have time to play along.

He must have rung you after I gave him the flick.  :crazy1:

I said I'm not with Telstra. He said everyone is with Telstra, just via another company (or some such thing)

Then I said anyway, I don't have a computer. He said do you have a Notebook or Tablet? I said "what part of I don't have a computer don't you understand?" Then i said "I only have a phone - I've had enough of this $hit" then hung up and blocked the number. SHortly after i got a call which i missed from a private number...

I assume that Telstra is the equivalent to our British Telecom (BT for short)

In the UK there are two main phone/broadband distribution networks :-

BT - through its subsidiary Open Reach - own the original and biggest network of copper to the consumer - but are quickly installing fibre in the main towns. All independent phone and broadband suppliers use their network

Virgin own the main fibre cable network country-wide but also use the Open Reach network in places they have yet to install fibre.

Hence I imagine it is technically possible for BT to detect slow running, but I don't see how they would be able to identify a particular consumer of another broadband supplier.

Just read about another scam.

At check out the cashier adds cashback to the bill.

If you just put your card in reader and tap in your pin, take card and go it is impossible to dispute later.

Most occur when a receipt IS NOT given so all you see on your account is a total.

Be aware.........

I know I'm old but I just cannot understand why so many people don't bother with their receipt.
I would never use a credit or a debit card and not take the receipt. AND check the printout.
