Title: Alerting a member to a topic or post
Post by: Shambles on January 14, 2016, 00:02:25
Need to alert a member to a post or topic you've made?

Try our new "mentions" system - very similar to the MugBook mentions system.

A member you "mention" in a post will be alerted via email & profile mark that you've mentioned them.

To do this, simply use @member-name somewhere in your post (ie, type '@' followed by the member name); as you start typing the alert, a drop-down selection may appear to assist you in selecting the member you wish to alert.

Jeebers, the things we do for you  :happydance:

You can see any outstanding alerts/mentions in your profile by clicking your "profile" menu item, which gives you the opportunity to turn off email alerts for any mentions of your name.

@Shambles I have already received an Email to notify me that you had used my name in vain. I wondered what it was about.

@Dazzler must be worried about the new system - with all the fans and honourable mentions he gets on the forum his Email inbox is gonna be stuffed.....

 good one :goodjob:

Tapatalk users also get a push notification, unless those are switched off in the app.

Click his name.

Phil #1 is has a strange character which is confusing the software and omitting the space.

Was going to ask if that was a bug? :D   Of course the response to that might have been: With the user? Or with his name?  :P

So this also incorporates the [member=xxxx] functionality - correct?

FYI for those who didn't know (probably a good number) that functionality was to display the current 'nick' of a user (when message is being viewed) and link to their profile - as specified by their user ID... which you had to be able to determine manually (knowing where to look could be different between browsers) and insert it.   BTW thanks again for implementing that.

Where as this allows you to use the current nick and it goes gets the specified user's ID and inserts that in the 'bbc' statement - Nice!

 :goodjob2: :goodjob:  :ta:

Just one question - what happens when some quotes the text which is containing the mention-member functionality?  Does the user get a second notification, etc.?

Great questions, to which I have no answers

The [member=nn] remains available ;)

I'll try to bottom out the problem with Phil, as I've already had a message from Phil Davenport regarding the emails he received before I turned off his 'mention' email notifications  :-[

Trouble with all the reprobates... err I mean all the users :D ... who use the forum is that it is very hard to tell when someone is joking or being serious sometimes.

Like usual - just not good enough

Cool - I suspect in most instances people would use the @ notation alerting the mentioned user.  But could still be useful sometimes - and would need to remain to support the instances already (unless you did a search and replace or equiv. DB query/statement).

I amended the quote at the time so I didn't get an alert on my mobile in the bedroom (didn't want to wake Trish up) But sounds like I needn't have worried...
