Hi I am new to Hyundai having had mondeos for years. My issue is the rattle coming from the car on smooth roads. On the previous mondeos it was usually a sign the droplinks were knakd. Any suggestions or known issues I can look at 1st

Welcome Colin,

It could be a number of things including a bush in the steering column. I'll let our more technical members list the possibilities.

At least coming from a Ford you would be used to rattles. From my experience with Fords they should be listed as a feature of the car.

Hi Colin,
This is one proposition you would not bother asking a Mondeo owner  But can you pinpoint the area of the rattle?
Suspension-front or rear. Steering, Body?

I would say it is suspension tbh though at 1st I did think it was exhaust or boot related. Premium model with 17” alloys shod with 225/45 tyres doesnt help. Otherwise it is a joy to drive.

Ok its at the rear . :goodjob2:
If its done high mileage check shockies. otherwise check rear view mirror, you could have a Mondeo behind you.

Lots of rear rattles on this forum have turned out to be the rear seat catches.

Excellent point John. I had forgotten that. (Dazzler's ego takes an enormous hit..  :snigger: )

Yes, try dropping the seat backs forward and wrap a little bit (a couple of "rounds") of electrical insulating tape around the catch where the seat backs grab the loop. Now give the seat backs a good click back into place and see if the noise is gone.

By the way, didn't realise you had a Premium Diesel CW. Love that combo, best combo in the 1st series. Great motor + practical good looking body + all the goodies... Nice.

Thanks for ideas, will try and report back. Nice car with plenty of toys in. Previous car was a mondy ghia and the i30 is on same spec I reckon. Only thing with it so far was it is a white car and looked a bit dull espesh with the strange alloys it came with. Hyundai 17” with chrome plastic inserts in the spokes. I decided tochange this to liven up the look and went gloss black. What a difference it makes, it now looks quite smart and freshens it up.

I still can't believe with Australia as one of their biggest markets for the i30 we did not get those bumper and grille updates.

Jealous :p

Knocks and rattles can be very deceptive,

I think the update coincided with the opening of the Czech factory (pretty much) which only supplies cars to Europe. They didn't bother with retooling the Korean factory for some reason.  :undecided:

Ok, the noise is definitely front nearside suspension related. Very similar to what I used to get with mondy droplink wear. Any known issues in this area before I start changing parts. Any tips on what brand for replacement parts also. Btw I did the seat catch think with tape. Wasn’t that.

Hi Colin,  :)

There are known wear points on the front, but usually only because of high mileage and nothing that is a common fault. Being nearside, the  LH strut etc have been working hardest. Your icy conditions also appear to be more taxing than in our moderate climate.
Never the less I have had noise from the drop link (strut to torsion bar). Also internal in the strut.- change whole strut. While  lower ball joint wear is not common on the i30, it is something you should investigate.
Try lifting and lowering the car. Any noise when the weight goes back on the wheel?
Does the rattle alter on a turn? this indicates CV joint.
Loose brake pads if they are worn or anti squeal clip is broken.
Cracked rear bush rubber on lower control arm.

That should keep you busy. Gerard can sort parts as and when you need them. Good Luck

I too had noise from my drop links a while back and replaced the set for +- AU$50. Hyundai SA wanted AU$180, but I managed to find Delphi replacements that have lasted around 70k km so far with no obvious wear (car has 245k km on the odo now).

Best of luck! :goodjob2:

links topped my list because they have fairly small joints that do a lot of work.

The mileage has been standing still the last year or so as I only use my car over weekends for maybe 80 - 100km a month now. I have the company Caddy that I use daily, which certainly helps the fuel bill :goodjob:

:goodjob2: Sounds like a well educated starting point. Flogged out and hard stabiliser bushings can also make a good knock and groan more likely in high K units, age will harden the bushes for just a groan. Did mine recently on 2 vehicles.
