I had a punter come to me a few days back with non functioning steering on a 2007 yr vehicle.

First was to check the fault codes and power to the column... All pointed to a steering column fault on the electronic side. So I priced one up -- £1500 with 12.5% discount   :Jaw:  Now being technically minded and knowing GSW I found the part number and compared it with an ebay item of £175.  The item was purchased and sent down to me to fit. I fitted the new column and hey presto we have a functioning steering but an ESP light on.  The problem was the Steering angle sensor out by 59% so I recalibrated the sensor with a diag machine called Launch and the fault disappeared.  So you can fit a secondhand column if the part number is right but there is one thing I should mention, that is  the dealer who quoted me new, keeps three in stock , so it seems to be a part which gets fitted on a regular basis.

There is an EPS ECU upgrade for the i30 on early models and a column pinch bolt torque modification. I will place the details of it on here at a later date

Thanks very much for that. This is quite topical for me as I'm about to complain about my steering column clunk again. Any more detail you can find would be appreciated by many here I'm sure.

They contain embedded external images so Gdocviewer won't even try to view them. As Dazz says you need to right-click and download them :(

Im still looking in to this but I have been told the Steering angle sensor is a problem.  As I have a spare column I will see what the chances of repair are, if i can find a supplier.

Right... I have managed to strip the thing down. I now know that something on the angle sensor circuit board has gone tits up through resistance measurements. Need a decent magnifying glass to see whats wrong with it and who builds it....
