Does anyone know if the centre console USB to head unit connection is just a standard USB plug on the head unit end?  I'm thinking of installing a new double DIN head unit which uses a USB connection to the phone for Android Auto, and was hoping to utilise the existing USB connection.

Thanks for that.  Even though the head unit I bought (Sony XAV-AX100) has a USB cable coming out from it, I wonder if the exiting loom connects the USB port up?  Only one way to find out I guess!

Looking at the manual (http://download.sony-asia.com/consumer/IM/4686137311.pdf) it doesn't look like there is a USB connection from the i30 harness that plugs into the main loom plug. 

Any ideas if you think this will be possible somehow to have the head unit USB plug connected to the centre console USB plug?

While I'm at it, are you able to advise what adapter ( Secondary Harnesses | Aerpro) I would require to go from the i30 to the XAV-AX100?

No idea, I'm not a car audio specialist. May be possible to work out the pin outs and build a harness. Maybe pull the ipod socket out and use the shell to construct a USB socket in there.

Contact somewhere that specialises in these fitouts, they're bound to have some good ideas or may even have something to fit.

I know with a pioneer I fitted to an old astra you could get  harness adaptors to interface with the factory harness.

I tend to keep things standard these days if I can.

Afraid not, but thanks for the link, some real interesting gear in there for anyone considering upgrading. It was an Aerpro harness I got for my old Astra, made things real simple so you're on the right track I feel.

Possibly, but I wonder how hard it is to remove the existing socket/cable that runs from the centre console to behind the dash?

If it were me, I'd either:

a) strip the connector and do continuity checks to connect a new standard USB plug to the loom without messing with the socket panel.

b) build a new connector to match the existing loom end to preserve Hyundai configuration/reversability.

It depends on how keen you are to restore it to the original unit later.

Here's some images of the jack assembly removed and disassembled which is very straightforward.

Removing the centre console will make it easiest.

Yep, the earth solder joint is taking a bit of physical stress there. I wouldn't often say this but it's a case of the bigger the blob the better the job for that little problem.

The USB looks pretty tightly bound to the supporting circuitry but you look capable enough of tracing tracks and signals between connectors and working out which pins do what, or opting for replacing the circuit module altogether with separate USB and audio terminations for your new head unit.

Thanks guys - all seems straight forward, but I'm not sure I'm up to modifying the connection.

I'm wondering whether the existing stereo harness, when connected to the new head unit, USB from the centre console will somehow just... work?  One way to find out I guess!

Now I need to decide whether to cut my existing fascia, or do the complete swap.  Cutting looks easy enough and retains the dash container, but there's no going back.

Double your fascia count through wreckers or eBay and there will peace of mind for 'going back'

Here HOW TO: FD Body - OEM (2DIN) headunit - Wiring/Pinout is the pinout for the FD-01 - inc. USB D+, D-, USB/IPOD VDD and IPOD/USB GND connections.  On that labeling one would assume the USB port in center console connects straight through - but probably best to meter it out to be sure.   As observed there is quite bit of circuitry on that board - could just be logic for old 30pin iDevice cable that you could get back then, could be for noise suppression, could be to support the LEDs, etc. ... might be all three.

As to adapters - they aren't really an off the shelf item... you can find them online (or something close to them) but usually not everything is completely mapped through either.

I keep cursing my low tech for not being able to reach into the image of the USB/Audio board and flip it for some good ol' fashion track tracing, but the more I look, the more I think the SMD chip is for the audio and perhaps the two 6V caps may be for audio as well, since it probably needs signal conditioning such as noise suppression. All the tiny SMD bits are mostly resistors with a few diodes in the mix. Damn you low tech! My flip button isn't responding. Mr Data, run a diagnostic!

I replaced the audio system with a Macrom M-DL5000 player. The following components are required:

The navigation system responds very quickly, the sound is very good. Steering wheel controls are connected.
Working time was 4 hours.

Tell me, is the panel where the HVAC controls are did you paint that or was it that colour OEM? Ours is black on the non climate a/c models.

The panel came with this paint. From the old panel use the appliances, screws and clips.
