Hi. I've owned my 2017 i30 from new and would like to raise it 30mm to get more ground clearance, can this be done without detrimentally  affecting it ?

:welcumwagon: Well that's an interesting twist! We get heaps of enquiry and discussion about lowering but that's the first one about raising it in over 10 years of the site operating  (as far as I can recall)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not ridiculing you at all. I'm not a fan of lowering cars myself due to generally harsher ride and more risk of skirt damage.

I can see the benefit of a 30mm lift in some situations, like easier access and rough road driving. I would get some quotes from various suspension specialists. Some sort of block would be a lot cheaper than replacing springs and shockies but not sure what your options are. Might get a bit more body roll depends on how they do the lift I guess.  :undecided:

Not a common request as Dazz said . Is it for ground clearance or to assist getting in/out?
If in/out, is your seat height adjustable? , No - possible to raise seats by use of steel section between body snd mounting bracket?

Ground clearance :

:link: Tyre Size Calculator | Help | Tempe Tyres

You could try using above tyre calculator. Enter your current tyre demensions,  enter something higher in profile to see difference.  Speedo will be out,  and you must ensure clearance when turning wheels.  Visit a tyre shop for advice.

If you were able to find a taller spring with the correct spring rate then you'll likely have to look at changing shocks also to accommodate the extra travel.

I wouldn't know if other areas of the suspension geometry would be compatible with this sort of a change though :undecided: as Dazzler mentioned most who do springs changes go down in height, mainly for better stability and looks whereas raising will create the opposite with stability, these sorts of changes usually require many hours of testing before reliable safe setups can be produced.

Sounds like a Kona would have been more suitable

Agree with that, buy an SUV.

Unlike Dazz, I'll be blunt, just cant imagine trying to sell the thing , ugly as :sicky: and unstable.

As luck would have it the Kona has 30mm more ride clearance.

So just get one of them. I dare say it the changeover would be much cheaper, and the drive more predictable than trying to replicate the same on the i30.

For sure :goodjob2:

Kona and the i30 PD use the same chassis so swapping the complete suspension over would be what's required, would also be more costly than trading up to the Kona :)

Thanks guys. The Kona, tucson and i30 have identical general specs ( tucson has 17"wheels) this is what led to my enquiry. Hi lift kits are available on line for arround $400 and my son can fit them, but, it's any others issues like over extension  etc that has me worried . I am off the older variety and would appreciate easier access plus better dirt road clearance. I looked at the Kona and didn't like it, Tucson is out of my price range plus i30 has better overall specs . My cousin is a retired Ford senior engineer and recons car companies don't vary much with these similar models and to go ahead.
Btw. I've always thought outside the box lol !

Changing vehicles is not an option. Some elderly retirees rely on a pension and not loaded as generally believed.
Thanks for your collective input, i will now move on.

Thanks for your query, upsizing is difficult at times.
Our GD has 205/55r26 Nexens, when they die,  going to 215/60r16 Ecopia.
16mm sidewall increase,  speedo error will make it exactly correct. 100 will be 101 not 94 .
Better tyre all round . A bit heavier tyre and does change road noise pitch and volume .

Thanks mickd. This path i will explore.
I did the same on my previous suv/ute with good result but i wondered about clearance problems with my i30. It's a whole new ball game  :victory:

I went this route, original tyres finally wore out - 50,000 ks. 30mm lift and everything else worked out. As i needed new tyres there was no extra  cost involved. Many thanks mickd

Did you buy a lift kit online? I noticed some on Ebay and Amazon for around $300AU - https://www.amazon.com.au/Tema4x4-Complete-Hyundai-TUCSON-Elantra/dp/B07BBK6WPF

As per my last post i fitted larger diameter tyres.  30mm hight , no noticeable performance loss,  better ride and handling and speedo is now only 1 km out instead of 5-6 km out.
