Title: The Mary Valley Rattler - Historic Train Trip
Post by: Surferdude on November 07, 2020, 02:06:15
We did this a little while ago but I've just got round to sorting the pics.

The Mary Valley Rattler is a restored old coal fired train which runs between Gympie (itself a historical town and the first spot gold was discovered in Queensland), and the hinterland township of Amamoor.
The route originally went all the way to Imbil, which you can see on the map. Maintaining the line for that distance eventually got too much for the volunteer organisation. For a while the whole thing shut down but was resurrected in the shorter guise.

You can choose to do the trip from Gympie to Amamoor or Amamoor to Gympie. Either way you get a meal at the end of it. We chose the latter and became part of a day tour which picked us up from home in a mini bus, took us to Kenilworth for morning tea. Great cheeses and Yoghurt.
The mini bus took us via Nambour then Mapleton and via Obi Obi Rd to Kenilworth.
Back in my rallying days we'd sometimes use Obi Obi Rd. Winding, twisting and long drops off the side. Interesting in a 20 seater mini bus.  :crazy1: I must admit I was more than a little pleased to find it was now a one way road (in the direction we were going  :whistler:)

From Kenilworth we  drove to Amamoor to board the train.

Pics follow, beginning with a couple of maps.

Obi Obi Rd on Google maps.

The bottom loop was the one we took.
Back in the day it was two way.
Now they've added a bitumen eastern section to the north.
