Looking for help from some of our more computer savvy members.

I have an old laptop I want to install Ubuntu on. It's currently Windows XP.
The stumbling block I keep running into is the apparent need to do something with the ISO download in order to get it to run.

(Why the hell can't you just download the program and install it?)

Anyway, despite having spent the afternoon reading on line help stuff I have completely failed to get anywhere.

Can someone help me in simple easy to follow terms, please?

It never used to be this hard.
Years ago I installed it on another laptop with dual boot setup. With no problems.

I'm not sure if I understood you correctly.  anyhow here goes, the ISO file should be installed on a CD/DVD then you can use it as a CD/DVD to install the program on your laptop.

I hope this is some help, obviously if I misunderstood just ignore this post

Thanks mate.
The laptop in question doesn't have a cd/ DVD drive.
I've put it on a USB but the ISO won't do anything. It just tells me I don't have a program to open it.

Download Unetbootin
Run Unetbootin.
Now, from the drop-down menu under Type: select Hard Disk.
Next select the Diskimage. ...
Press OK.

I can follow all that until the "Diskiimage" bit.
Is that the ISO file?

Do you need it to be Ubuntu? I use Puppy Linux, which can be booted from the USB. That means you can carry your desktop and files on your keyring. :goodjob:

Thanks Gonz.  I looked at the puppy based on previous posts by you but am happy to have the laptop fully loaded. It's a little 10" Samsung.
