Title: i30 2017 SE NAV Pretol 1l - Clutch Issue
Post by: guest12865 on November 11, 2019, 14:45:12
We purchased a used i30 (2017 model) in April 2018 direct for a major dealer. The car was one year old with 8k miles. Since we have added 17k in 1 1/2 years so average miles. It appears we have a judder when moving away in first gear and have been advised this may be a clutch issue. The problem is the car was sold with full health check and so we are very upset that after 17k miles we have developed a problem. We are careful drivers combining short and long trips and having only recently changed front tyres at 24k. Our local Hyundai advised us not to spend money (£75) on the investigation fee and go straight to the problem which means removing the gearbox at great expense.

My questions to owners are:
1. Has anyone else experienced a similar juddering in first gear (most notably when we have had wet weather.)
2. Has Hyundai not honoured their investigation fee by demanding more to strip out the gearbox.
3. Has Hyundai not covered a clutch/gearbox well within the warranty period.

Advice and help appreciated.

We had a 2014 manual Tourer (wagon) which developed a very minor oil leak after around 12 months or so. I actually thought I was imagining it for a while. A few drips here and there. Anyway it must have been nearly 2 years old when I finally got them to investigate.  It turned out to be the main seal i think they called it. Upon further investigation they discovered that some oil had also got onto the clutch assembly. So Hyundai not only authorized the new seal replacement but a new clutch as well. My wife hadn't noticed any issues with the original clutch. So all good in our case. Had the car another 2 years without any further issues.

Had four i30s over an 11 year period and this was the only significant warranty issue we ever had.

Unfortunately, 2 dealers will not go near it without charging for the time needed to investigate (removing the gearbox). We are in contact with Hyundai UK just to get them to clarify we will only incur the investigation fee (£75) regardless of the work needed (warranty or not). The dealers in question have made my wife feel very uncomfortable when she has taken it for assessment. We are just after some helpful advice and experience before we approach the dealer (Richmond Guildford) who sold us the car.

SC1969. Mate with respect, its your problem , your warranty, your obligation to man-up and point to the judder. No further need to 'inspect'.

Any question here about client to dealer relationship will result in about 90% negative responses. That seems to apply to virtually all the common brands.

This response is no better than the dealerships I have been dealing with. If your wife/partner was driving a car in the depth of winter some distance from home and your car failed would you not consider a more appropriate response than this. We buy cars with WARRANTIES and accept the good faith of dealers.

You obviously get a kick out of firing off rubbish. Maybe cinsider spending some time helping people.

"its your problem , your warranty, your obligation to man-up and point to the judder. No further need to 'inspect'."

From an Australian perspective "This response is no better than the dealerships I have been dealing with"  is exactly what we expect from dealerships down under.

However, we have some UK members who take exception to this and claim that all is wonderful and I am too hard on (UK) dealers.

You say that you send your wife in to deal with these guys and they treat her badly,  then you write to tell us, in Australia, about your household tribulations.  :head_butt:

@SC1969

I don't always agree with the way Gary words stuff but his heart is in the right place. What he is basically saying as your feedback about the dealers response is fairly common.

He is also saying there is obviously a problem and you need to be forceful (but probably more tactful than Gary) with the dealer to get this sorted.

This paying for investigation is bullshit. We didn't have to with Trish's oil leak.

If they won't capitulate I guess you'll have to agree to pay pending a refund. I understand your frustration and disappointment.

Who said I SENT my wife? My wife makes up her own mind. Being made to feel uncomfortable is a genderless perspective. Please refrain from bringing sexism into this as you don't even know if I am a man or woman. Can we please stick to talking about cars, not people.

damp weather clutch judder in the UK is not unknown.  First thing I'd try is give it a bit of throttle and clutch slip to warm the plates up a bit, you'll probably find it just goes away (for now).

The dealer £75/£80 diagnostic fee is also a thing. not a something you'd have come up against 10 years ago with Hyundai dealers, but definitely do now.. I suspect it's as much cost avoidance as covering expenses. Even when I was sure I had a factory fault recently is does play on your mind.
