Hi all new member here
I have tried to look round the forum but I am struggling to find an answer to my problem.

My Father in laws 2008 i30 2.0 crdi premium has stopped charging and the power steering has failed as well.

Is the power steering bolted to the back of the alternator?
could this be a alternator pully clutch problem?

Any other suggestions?

Many thanks

Rob

How many kilometers has this car done? Power Steering is electric, EPS, So you say it's stop charging, I presume charge lamp is lit up in the cluster indicating a fault.  Wild guess but if steer assistance ceased at exactly the same time as the no charge, it may be a feature to reduce the demand on the battery?

Clutch pulley problem? Which one? If the cluych seized the alternator wil still rotate an charge.

This could be a natural death if it's done high kilometers. The brushes and / or the commutator rings are both subject to wear.

Voltage regulator and brush assembly are integral from memory. Likely a VALEO unit if it's simalr to the D4FB 1.6 CRDi

Hope I'm not about to choke on some humble pie here. These diagrams look very suspiciously hydraulic, I do apologise .

If what I'm seeing here is a hydraulic unit on the rear , then If the clutch pulley has failed and free spinning , thereby not turning the shaft, then yeah, sounds like you're all over the  issue :faint: :head_knock: :-[

Is this what the pulley looks like?

37322-27020

I may have found the answer, rear pump is a vacuum pump, just looked like hydraulic connections, I thought that but for a moment I was unsure. They're oil supply lines to the pump.

We don't have that setup here, D4FB has the vac pump off the camshaft on other side of motor.

So we're back at the likelihood of worn out alternator I feel

regulator / brush assembly and diode pack

It may be possible to do just the brushes, but depends on the wear of ither items and then you should consider bearing life

That sir is an amazing response thank you
its done 46k miles
so if I read correctly the alternator fails, so the power steering turns off to save the battery?

That is an assumption of mine and  I would thin that's not enough Ks to wear out the brushes. It's not something I've read of yet but he steering is electric.

You may have to confirm / fault find charging cct first. Resolve that and then look at the EPS sytem if it's still also dead.

Without looking deeper at the manuals, all I have for now.

So charge lamp  is on?

Has anyone put a meter across the battery with engine runnig to see what voltage is there? Typically sothing near 14V

is the RED EPS lamp on?

EPS CM controls EPS solenoid current accurately according to vehicle speed. EPS CM monitors that operating voltage supplied as IG S/W is too high or too low on "power supply terminal". If excessive high voltage or low voltage is detected, EPS CM stops current supply to solenoid to prevent unexpected operation or damage.

EPS CM sets this code and turns on warning lamp if excessive low voltage caused by faulty alternator or poor connention in power supply circuit is detected.

I would say the EPS fail is voltage related / alternator if alternator has failed

It could be a DENSO unit

Some bits and pieces.

:link: Alternator, Alternator regulator, Pulley, Rectifier, Bearing, Holder, Carbon brushes 02131-9262 OEM for HYUNDAI, KIA

Basic checks too like connections , cabling etc at the alternator

It may be easiest to either get a complete unit or maybe a good one from a wreck. Likely most of the 2.0 TCDI had same alternator attached, so this motor is not limited to an i30, Sonata, maybe Kia as well

Just in case we overlooked this, naturally confirm clutch pulley can still rotate shaft and not free spinning. I don't know all th emodes of failure, I have had one seize though.

yes that is the unit we have.
The voltage in the battery when engine running was 8.5 volts so the alt is definitely dead.
we are going to change the complete unit to make sure.

many thanks for your help

I'm amazed it was, most computers would drop out before then, give that battery a good charge. I guess we won't get autopsy results on this  one. :Pout:
