My 2012 i30 Elite (GD) doesn't have a latch, you just unlock the car and push the petrol door which makes it pop out.  Then unscrew the cap.  Since Friday night, it's not opening.  No matter what I do to push it, the door won't release.  Even showing something in to lever it open isn't working and looks like it'll just break something.

Piss poor timing as it's weekend and Hyundai are closed.

Two questions I suppose?

1. How can I wedge it open?
2. Is this a Hyundai only thing, can any mechanic fix it or do I have to take it to a smash repairer?

Cheers

I would take the less 'smashing' approach and start by checking whether the electrical signal is reaching the lock.

It does in fact have a latch and it has failed to retract when the body control unit has also released your doors.
Its there to make it hard for thieves so force will do damage.
If its just sticking, some wd40 may  find its way in. A few slaps on the body around the flap??
Only other, way in is to remove the interior panel, that will expose the back of the filler pipe and presumably the latch.

Agreed. I dont remember seeing an individual fuse. Where to start?
Check other end is easy just need to get to the latch.

Should be a panel in the boot on the left,  marked fuel release .

If I recall correctly the FD door sometimes stuck because the plastic cap tether got twisted and foweled on the cap itself. Does the GD have a tether? Can't check Trish's at the moment.  :undecided:

It does though I cant see how it would prevent the door from opening.

In the FD sometimes it can somehow get hooked around the catch. I think it was the FD I recall it with. We've had so m any cars...

Design has likely changed as the cable wouldn't be able to reach the latch in the GD, no interior fuel release as NZ discovered :disapp: probably have to unclick some of the rear trim and see if it's accessible :undecided:

you blokes are awesome, thank you.

I played around a bit and finally got it open without going the smashing approach.  NFI what I did to make it work tbh, but i've left the cap open so after I fill up I will go back to experimenting lol

Had the same problem at my 2012 GD a few years back. They changed on warranty that knob and locking system. Within a year or so, the problem returned. But it didn't affected me that much as I could operate the cap with my nail.

I've had the same issue with my 2012 Elite a couple of times now (and had to drive away without buying fuel the first time).
It only occurs (for me) when I haven't stopped the car in the correct sequence (push button start/stop). If I open the door first, or it's not in park first, I'll have trouble.
The only way I've found to open the tank when that happens is to restart the car, select drive, then stop again in the approved sequence.

Hope that helps.

I seem to remember a similar situation with a 2010 Santa Fe. I know I drove off without getting fuel at one stage and went to a quiet street where I could do the wotzup idiot act in private.
Eventually decided it was easier to sell the bloody thing than fuel it.
