AEB working?

I have an 2018 i30 Elite. Great little car. The smart cruise control works great and if some one brakes in front, so do we, though, some times I feel the Smart cruise brakes are a little severe. My question is about the AEB, which I don't think I have ever seen working, even when purposely driving up to the rear of a car and waiting to see the AEB kick in...nothing. I have the AEB tick selected on in the little LCD tick box. I have never touched the ESC, so presume it is on?

If the AEB is selected on, does it signal so on the LCD when you are driving?

I've felt mine in the SR kick in a couple of times when people have darted across in front of me at the last minute. I've had a couple of instances where there has been barely enough gap between me and the car in front for someone to say turn into a fuel station from the other lane. My car has balked for a second or so sensing an obstruction. But that is only about twice in 41,000 kilometres.  :cool:

If the AEB is selected on, does it signal so on the LCD when you are driving?

YES, when AEB activates, (which it only does if you are less than a second away from crashing into the car in front of you), it will display a warning message and play alert tones/beeps on your 4.2" display (the one between speedo & the tacho), warning you of your imminent collision.  A smidgen later within that same second, it will commence applying light brake pressure, and several milliseconds after that, it will apply heavy braking.  In practice this all happens so quickly, that one rarely notices anything at all, since most of the time you're actually looking through the windshield at things outside (it's called driving), rather than down at the instrument cluster.  One barely hears the beep/warning sound before it's all over.
However you can read all about it in the manual, or the PDF of the manual.

If you really want to "try it out", and you're advised not to, find a spot where you can safely turn left at the last second, for example at this freeway onramp, using a car in the left lane standing at the red light as the subject, such as at this spot near you..

I have my car since August this year and this feature kicked in twice.  1st time scared the shit out of me - I am pretty sure I have everything in control, yet the car determined that I wont brake in time hence the emergency brake kicked in ... big Jolted and full stop. Lucky no car were behind me else they would have run up my rear.

Second time it kicked in and saved me :)   It is pretty drastic when it kick in.  There is no misunderstanding when it happened  :goodjob2:

Lesson learned, now I leave a fair gap between myself and the car up front just in case :)

All I know is with the system in the SR using cameras and radar combined it is way more accurate and less likely to give false warnings than the simpler system in my previous Calais. That gave lots of erroneous warnings on the collision detection alert.  :crazy2:

Happened to me once. I think it was in slow traffic and I was aware of the car in front of me, so was kind of surprised it happened, but glad to know it works!

Maybe I need to find a soft target...umm, I could get several witches hats stacked up, sit them on a quiet road and drive at them. If I had several stacked, it would be like a person. The manual says the AEB kicks in greater than 10kmh. I will ask the Dealer if they ever test the AEB and other smarts.

What about the poor bugger behind you?
Yesterday, I was following a BMW on the freeway and it seemed like he was riding the brake pedal, also braked on a bend as he caught up with cars in the lanes each side of him. AEB?
Ive noticed more than the usual brake riding as more AEB cars hit the road.
Its a sure way to get rammed from behind.

I found that the autonomous cruise does this in tbe Santa - not a fan.

The ACC wants to maintain a  gap and if you're in the right lane and someone comes across from the left it slams the brakes on to establish the gap again. Also hard to slowly close the gap to a vehicle as it keeps the gap.
Have asked Hy dealer about resetting it so distance would be less but dealer didnt think it was possible but thought brake lights would be activated when above happened.

The ACC wants to maintain a  gap and if you're in the right lane and someone comes across from the left it slams the brakes on to establish the gap again. Also hard to slowly close the gap to a vehicle as it keeps the gap.
Have asked Hy dealer about resetting it so distance would be less but dealer didnt think it was possible but thought brake lights would be activated when above happened.

In my SR you can adjust the gap between 1 and 4 car lengths ( I set mine at 3 - seems a good compromise) I tended to be a bit of a tailgater before I got automated cruise. :-[

That's why at the  moment I'm no fan of it.

That's why at the  moment I'm no fan of it.
Maybe our Hy dealer at Bega will look into it for me.

Coming back to the 'normal' driver behind an ACC /AEB .
There remains the same danger as driving behind an incompetent or nervous driver, eventually you ignore her
brake light that constantly flashes, even when she does slam on the brakes.
Consequently, she throws a tanty when the Tasmanian painter rams into her rear end.  :whistler: just saying  :cool:

Regarding the BMW I mentioned. He was on the speed limit, but I got so p!ssd off , I sped up and passed him, he dropped back about 6 car lengths, later observed other drivers treating him the same way.

Interesting feedback Gary, but nothing will stop me using ACC. In fact it is now a must have on my car buying list. "Legend in his own lunchtime" AKA Auto Expert loves it too.  :victory:

Mine has kicked in twice and the first time like you it really freaked me out, the second time I wasn't very thrilled either.  Now I try to stay out of those situations.
