+My UK spec i30 diesel includes hill start assist, but I've never been able to make it work, even when trying it on quite steep slopes. There's very little in the handbook to describe how it is supposed to work. I presume if the car is pointing up a hill, with the handbrake on and the car in neutral, if I then push the clutch in, put it in first gear, and release the handbrake, the hill start assist should stop it rolling back. Feeding in the power and letting the clutch out should then allow me to pull away from standstill, but without the complication of co-ordinating it with the handbrake release. Is this how it's meant to work? My car is the 2015 GD version.

My i30s worked on the principle of sustaining the brake pedal for 2 seconds, not the handbrake.

So, on that hill, press the brake then let go. See if holds for 2-3 seconds.

I tried it on the foot brake, it still rolls back as soon as I let go of the brake. It's going in for a service soon, I'll ask the dealer about it.

  Not doubting you, but that is odd.

It does need a noticeable slope to work.

I have noticed it working on hills in the i40.

I wondered why you would need it with an auto, but of course the DCT does not have a torque converter.

OK, so it does work. I managed to find a steep enough slope to try it on, but I'm surprised how steep it has to be. Only works when putting it into gear from neutral. It hardly seems worth having if the operation is a bit hit and miss.

Mine works on moderate slopes, feels weird to let the handbrake off and the car does not move !!

Mine only holds car for few seconds before it releases.

Hate it.

Never relied on it to hold car.

Always apply handbrake when i'm stopped.

It's definitely one of those love it or hate it features.
I learnt on a 1967 Holden - its only "feature" was a radio.

With the manual gearbox I find it handy sometimes... not sure why an automatic would need it though.
