Hi all,

2 weeks ago I purchased a '2015 HYUNDAI i30 SE'. This was ordered from Hyundai direct and was described as perfect condition. Having driven the car on numerous journeys over the week. Some long and some shorter we were unable to get the ISG to work at all. All is says is 'conditions not met'.

We took the car back to the dealer we purchased it from and they have done multiple checks and have done the following:

1: reset the computers (which takes 6 hours)
That didn't work....

2: realising the battery was only charging to 84% they replaced the battery, then reset the computers (another 6 hours)
That didn't work.... Battery was still reading 84%

3 : replaced the LIN sensor, then reset the computers again (another 6 hours)
This again hasn't worked

They are currently out of ideas and have been suggested to compare wiring of the car compared to that of a car that has a working ISG.

Has anyone else been through a similar process / having the same issues?

Don't want to have brought a car with a feature that doesn't work at all. I understand they have many elements that have to be right in order for it to work but it seems to mystery to me and the garage themselves...

Thanks

Hi Lorna and  :welcome:

As Asa said there is quite a bit on the site about ISG. Unfortunately, Hyundai haven't really mastered it in the i30, it seems to work far less than some other brands (due to a wide list of parameters) On the positive side it apparently doesn't make much difference to economy in the i30 even when it does. I can understand you being disappointed, but most on here who do have it working spasmodically would prefer to be able to switch it off permanently!

Here are a couple of threads to start you off. Pity your dealer hadn't read them...

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of those threads. There doesn't look to be a solution on those.

I think if I just saw it happen once I would be happy. I've never seen it work in the time I have had it. It's going back into the garage next week for them to run some more tests etc, so I guess I will see what they come back with then. It's so bad that this is a known issue and they haven't managed to figure it out yet.

Thanks again.

Maybe we should swap cars - I despise the ISG and would love to disable it. Permanently.

Out of curiosity - what is it that you don't like about it?

I've come from having a car that just about stays together to this. So currently feels like first class. Haven't really experienced ISG to understand the bad points.

After a daily 42 mile motorway drive to work, the last thing I need when I get to the queuing traffic is for the engine to stop. I like my turbo to cool down gradually and not be starved of life-saving lubrication. Of course, your petrol model won't have those concerns.

Also, doing stop/start in city traffic, it's so annoying to feel it cutting out then restarting when I depress the clutch.

So I hit the off switch just before I crank the engine on each journey - it's become second nature now for me to do that.

I don't have ISG Lorna, which is why I was unable assist at the beginning, my daughter however has and hers was a mini cooper.  Like Steve I hated it, I think it was somehow faulty as it gave you a really good kick up the bum whenever it re-engaged.

That said Lorna I can understand that you want the car to have all the features you paid for and wish you all the best in that pusuit  :goodjob: :goodjob:

Bear with me on this one...

So I stalled the car last night and fumbled around to get it started. It did the atomatic restart that it does and on the dashboard area a green light with an 'A' in the middle with an arrow going around lit up and flashed. I looked on the manual and it's the 'auto stop indicator'.

Does that mean the ISG worked? I've never seen this lift before. Although I have been unable to get it to do it again.

What's the "automatic restart" ?

Do you mean it started when you depressed your clutch?

On mine, that symbol you saw means it's started a counter of how long it's been off (minutes and seconds should be showing). I also see that symbol briefly when I deactivate the ISG, though that actually says "off" rather than a counter.

Yes I stalled and I did something and he engine started again. I wasn't really aware of what I did to start it. There was no counter that appeared. It just flashed for a while then dissapeard. I was trying to upload a photo of it but the file size is too big.

When you say you stalled it Lorna, are you sure that it wasn't the ISG which cut the engine.

Just to cause greater confusion <sigh>  unintentional I assure you

I'm curious. Get on over to imgur.com and upload your photo (it's a free service). Then you can post here the link imgur.com returns to you.

I am pretty sure I stalled.

It's not an image of my dashboard but the page in my manual that explains the light. I had never seen it before and it flashed green.

Here's Vayda doing an ISG stop.

Note the green "A" that appears for a few seconds:

Thank you Shambles, that was very useful to see it in action.

When mine happened only the green 'A' light appeared. I didn't get the auto stop message come up and the timer. I guess it will still have to go into the garage next week to be looked at :-( Although garage are not being very helpful at sorting things out currently.

So it's all fixed!!!

After having the battery replaced and the LIN sensor replaced it turns out it was a loose connection (not 100% sure where). But it's all working fine now.

They guy who felt with it all for me did admit that Hyundais ISG is not the most reliable.

Thanks for all your help.

If I was looking to buy a new car...and if ISG was a permanent 'feature' of that new car...and it could not be turned off...it would dissuade me from that model car.

Glad to hear it, Daz. It's just not for me...

It must put so much more strain on the battery, clutch, starter, ring gear than a system without it.

I have filed it away in the same useless invention category that has credit card flipping as a neighbour.

I'm not so sure these new systems do cause that much extra strain on components. :pout:
