Hi
Just given my 1.6 CRDI a bootfull of right foot for the first time after 5000 miles, noticed that at exactly 4,000 rpm the smooth engine note changes and a rattel/vibration/clatter (for want of a better description) starts from the engine, and goes through to 5,000rpm did not push to red line. Is this normal? Your expert oppinions would be welcome as usual.

In what gear?
I wouldn't take Fergie that high so cannot comment, other than the comment I already made :P
-
Mine has a gentle purr right thro the rev range in each gear.
I'd be checking the engine compartment for any loose bits and pieces.
-
No real benefit it revving past 4000 but if the opportunity arises I'll give it a blast and let you know... :D
-
Test was done in second gear.

i think i never revved it over 4500, when i want to push it i change exactly on the 4000 line;
i do however have a rattle, sometimes it can be heard,sometimes it can't. but it is always when idle, for example i drive for some time, then i get a red light, after taking my foot off any of the pedals a rattle comes from the dash i think...in idle mode, event the slightes touch on the gas pedal, as the revving start the rattle goes away, take my foot off rattle comes back up... any ideas? sorry if i was off topic

You'll find this is when the engine is coming off boost. You can recreate the same sound by disconnecting the turbo vacuum tube, thus having no boost.
This sound surprised me the first couple of times, in the lower gears, but you shouldn't hear it in the higher gears.
As for now, I don't get this sound anymore, since the Tuningbox has 'smoothed' out the power delivery.

our i30 has a sound but not a rattle a nice loud turbo whistle when we got the i30 first day dad took it down the motorway to see how fast it would go and the pull between the gears from the turbo is exstatic but he was disapointed at top end as it wasent as good as the elantra we had but bearing in mind that was a big 2.0 disel
