Title: steering angle sensor/steering column
Post by: szwak on March 10, 2019, 17:41:38
Hi to all
It's look like I might have problem with steering column. 4 months ago I noticed a warring light on my dashboard it was from ESC so decided to go to garage to check what cussed it. It was steering angle sensor problem so went to Hyundai dealer to make steering angle sensor recalibration. They did it but told if that will happen again the whole steering column needs to be replaced (£1500!!!!!!). I was quite shocked cos if they could fix it for the first time why they cannot do it again. I wasn't provided with any detail about what happend exactly. I did my own research and I found that a lot people had some clunky noises comes from steering column. Problem was related to plastic rubber bushing/coupler that was wear off so simply exchanging solved the problem. Question is if that coupler might have an impact on steering angle sensor or not. I had checked steering wheel and noticed that I have some noise too from steering column. I do not know what to do next I made another appointment for second recalibration I thought about second hand steering column replacement. From my point of view it's look like manufactured issue but car is nearly 2 years after warranty and Hyundai will not do anything. I have Hyundai i30 1.4 petrol 2012 reg uk version. If anyone have any idea about this issue I would be very appreciated for help.

Good morning (well it's morning here)  :winker:

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Aside from a rattle in the column and a warning light are there any other issues with the steering?

Does it feel different? Have you lost power assistance? Being 2012 (a transition year) is it a series 1 (FD) or series 2 (GD) model?

The steering knuckle replacement is not related to steering angle sensor as far as I am aware.

If worse comes to worst, a second hand column with some warranty would be the best and obviously cheapest way to go.

Sounds like an FD.
 Bush replacement = Au $220
Faulty one will cause EPS and ESC lights to show.
No need to change column.
Find all info in our search.

It is GD version no other issues just warning light from ESC as soon as I started the car. It's drive funny like there is some loose on the steering wheel but nothing really major. Computer scan says steering angle sensor abnormal. The thing is why they can't fix it again but want me to pay £1500 for new one that is 1/3 what the car is worth now. If that is steering angle sensor why they will not replace just sensor

@nzenigma  , I was just stirring the pot with NZ on this one. If the steering feels weird like more movement , it may be worth having a look at that bush. There was a bulletin, TSB-14-ST-002-1

It covers (noting this looks US market)
• 2011~2014 Sonata (YFa), 2011~2014 Sonata Hybrid (YF HEV)
• 2007~2014 Elantra (HD, MD/UD), 2009~2012 Elantra Touring (FD), 2013~2014 Elantra GT
(GD), 2013~2014 Elantra Coupe (JK)
• 2013~2014 Santa Fe (NC)
• 2012~2014 Azera (HG)
• 2012~2014 Veloster (FS)

Model Codes, YFa, YF HEV, FS, GD HD FD UD MD HG

If Hyundai are going down the column path then maybe avoid them for now. Purchase a bush online, they're cheap.

Find someone who can drop / or remove the column and has the recal tool for the steering sensor.
I done it both ways in my FD.

Remove the motor unit and inspect the bush. If it's intact, then the problem is likely elsewhere like the sensor. If it's bad , then you have the new one ready to go, replace, reassmble, recal and that may be the end of it for some time.

presently, our GDs dont have the knock that the FDs do at about 90-100,000 km.
Its possible they have a bush with different composition.
Korean manufacture Vs Czech?

It looks like I cannot get that bushier/coupler here in UK I have to buy whole unit 56330A but they don't have it at stock at the moment and cannot provide me with a price for it. Question is if that coupler (if weared off) can have an impact on steering angle sensor or not. The car is Czech manufactured

You can buy bush for $5 at a dealer, or get 10 from Korea or find them on Ebay.

I may be missing something in the translation. But is the light presently back on?

How many miles has the car done?

Also only a good mechanic at your end can tell us where the knock is coming from. You may have a suspension component failure.

No doubt you have thoroughly read or reports on detecting a failed bush and repairing same  :whistler:

You will understand that unfamiliar mechanics have trouble pin pointing the source of noise and play; therefore they wrongly diagnose uni joint, rack and sway bushes etc.

Yes light (ESC) is still on. Mechanic said after checking by computer that there is problem with steering angle sensor so car was provided with steering angle sensor recalibration. After that no light (ESC) show up on the dashboard. 4 months later warning light (ESC) shown up again and I was told if that happen again I gonna need new steering column (£1500) I think there might be problem with bushing/coupler but I do not know if broken or weared off coupler can trigger ESC light on and why computer says steering angle sensor? In UK I cannot get coupler itself I have to buy whole unit from picture I posted earlier. So I think the best way will be buy second hand steering column (£70) which was taken off from Hyundai i30 1.6 diesel 2016 reg plus £150 labour

I have the clunk! :crazy1:
But no lights are on, so I'm aiming squarely at replacing the rubber.
I just ordered a replacement and will dive under the dash when it arrives.
Is it strictly necessary to remove the column or can I work upside down and inside out as I did to replace the flasher unit for my LED turn indicators?

I think you have to pull the steering column out Gonz (if you are talking about the knuckle) Should be a how to on Youtube I imagine.

Gonz, one expert to another.  You could become a contortionist and do it under the dash. But why?

No faster that way.
All the bolts panels etc have to be removed. Then you start to perform.
You will then note that a couple of plugs and ONE bolt on the steering column to rack spline are all that remain to undo and remove the column to work bench.

Then you can COMFORTABLY change bush with more chance of aligning it without having to later calibrate.

PS. get maker pen and mark reassembly position on spline before removing column.

Good Luck
