I believe I have seen the same issue. I have a 2017 i30 SR Premium purchased Jan this year.

It happened 3 times the day beore the 1500km checkup and its happened about half a dozen times since. Naturally, it can't be replicated by the service technicians. The first time we suspected it was fuel related but Ive only put 95 in it since then. At the 10,000km it just had they tested again and found nothing of note either.

From my troubleshooting and observations I think its power realted or maybe starter time out related.  When it happens, the multimedia unit doesnt seem to power up and stays dark. The vehicle starts but the engine warning light shows. If I press the start button it usually shuts off the engine and it will then start as normal on the next try.  Once or twice pressing the start button has tried to start an already running motor but a second press will stop it and itll start fine again next try.

This has happened when the engine is both cold and warm. But like others mentioned, it seems more common to happen when its warm and Ive been at the shops for 30min to an hour.

Ive noticed during normal starting that the multimedia unit powers on with the engine, so if the engine takes longer to start then the multimedia unit is delayed.  The time seems to vary each time the vehicle is started.  There is a Hyundai logo that shows only about 1 in 10 starts where as most times it goes straight to the safety warning screen.  Its almost as if the engine starts right as the time out kicks in, leaving the engine running with a computer that thinks it didnt start.  Just my thoughts.

Next time it happens Ill try pressing the accelerator like suggested to see if that completes the ignition process.

Welcome Khuntza,

Thanks very much for that feedback. I wonder why only some are doing it? Mine is fine so far, but obviously it makes me a bit nervous. It is common enough I'm trying to get Hyundai to throw all their resources at getting to the bottom of it, but seems to be falling on deaf ears so far.

I was going to post something on Hyundai Australia's Facebook page but I doubt it would get past the Admin.  :undecided:

Have we tried to isolate it to a month of build? Is it an early batch?

Mine is pretty early. The latest reporter has a newer build than me. We could ask for the build month of  the affected cars. Good thinking beerman.

:crazy1:22/6....My i30 SR DCT is the PD2 Jan 2018 build that has the same starting issues as you describe.... I'm wondering if if sound be the mass airflow sensor.... mines going back into the dealership for a weeks checking on Monday. I've videoed a number of the occasions the car has trouble starting including the multimedia not coming on etc

Let's see what next week brings.

28/6...My car has been with Alto in Lane Cove West for 4 days....I think that theres been a lot of head scratching by Alto and Hyundai..they still have no idea whats causing the issue. They say that everything is testing fine. They've asked permission for the technician to take the car home tonight to give it a proper road run. They have also asked me to fill up the next 4 tanks with 98 octane, to keep a record of mileage and continue with video footage. Whilst I've agreed to do this ...its not the new car experience I expected and I don't think that I should be the Hyundai test mule.

Not overly happy if it does turn out to be fuel as the car is supposed to run on 91 and above!

Hi guys,

One of th reasons I upgraded my old car was because of the time I wasted trying to trace these sorts of issues. Typically if everything is checking out ‘fine’ by their scanners it tends to suggest something less obvious such as:

- Faulty ECU (cracked PCB or Faulty ICs, etc). Rare but not impossible.
- Bad earth and/or faulty connector that only presents when the car is warm. Heat = expansion.
- Intermittent fault in the engine that sensors aren’t picking up
- Faulty Body control module - I’m not even sure if an i30 has one of these but they can cause issues. Since your symptoms seem to elude to an electrical fault, perhaps a crack in a PCB when it’s warming up is showing its head.

The scan tools are only as good as the sensors. No codes = head scratching.

Have they discussed replacing the ECU, etc?

Just a little 2c worth based on my personal experience and research.

Mark.

Thanks Mark.

I’ll take the info to them.

I’m in the process of both writing to Hyundai and waiting from the dealer management to see why they think my experience so far is acceptable.

I agree that just working on fault codes is not the way forward. I’ve pointed out to them from day one that no codes are produced according to the auto link.

They had the car in for a week, racked up a whole 40 kms ( which suggests that other than the night a technician took it home), there wasn’t much road testing to get the car really warmed up. I can believe they couldn’t replicate the issue... I can almost guarantee it happens every time

So now it’s 6 weeks of 98 petrol which I can almost guarantee will prove nothing... then back to them with more video footage and the list of thinks to check as you suggest

I'm just going to split this additional info into its own thread. Time HY did a meerkat and looked over their silk screens into the real world.

And we seem to be repeating ourselves, esp. Dazz.

A combined thread title such as 'Hyundai Hiding from PD Starting Issue' would be more tabloid and confronting.
Insert first post with dot point of faults etc. Stats on Dealer response ( didn't happen to tried to dunno) ???????

There you go Gary, sounds like a plan. I know you are busy, but you are welcome to start one when you get time. But don't be too brutal...   :whistler: Stick to the facts and do try to be tactful..  :whistler:  :snigger:

@Dazzler  Ok will work on the new cunning plan.
I'll knock something up and post it and/or the data in that other area.

It seems like the standard response from dealers, upon Hyundai’s advise, is to blame the fuel. I think there are a few on the various threads that have said as much.

I get no sense that any parts are being taken off of the car and properly tested and inspected.

Given when the fault happens ( a warm start) it is logical to think that the fault lies with a part that expands with the heat.

I think those of us with any issues should badger the dealers and Hyundai to get a fix....it’s the squeaky hinge gets oiled.

All valid comments (except the dealer's fuel excuse)  :fum:

Very frustrating and embarrassing for a new car owner. So glad mine hasn't done it yet. Touch wood.  :sweating:

Be tactful but firm and persistent. The dealers need enough presure on them that they push it up the chain.

Minute electronic components can be susceptible to heat. The random nature of the fault is irritating.

Following on from the dealership not being able to replicate the warm start fault and no response from the sales guy  I thought I’d try Hyundai customer support.

Would you like to see their response?

UPDATE 30/7:

Following on from the d-logger data going back to Alto and then to Hyundai last week, the Hyundai Technical team believe the issue is faulty fuel injectors.

As with many things Hyundai, these need to be imported from South Korea...and so we now wait for the injectors to arrive.

The dealer wants the d-logger to remain attached for now and for a period once the new injectors have been fitted.

So for those of you out there with the same issue, it might be worth going back to your dealers with this information.

UPDATE 16/8/18

Fuel injectors replaced as per the Hyundai Australia request. I asked the Dealer to also look at the Throttle Position Sensor and Engine idle air control valve... but Hyundai hadn't given authority for anything other than the injectors ...hmmm

The d-logger remains attached...so far, i cant feel any difference to the ride/performance although i have noticed that the cooling fan has kicked in where is hadn't previously.....on the paperwork they had replaced 5L of coolant though?!?
