Title: Irritating Rattle from rear of a 2021 PD.4 N-Line with tow bar
Post by: Ratmick on December 09, 2022, 12:54:25
As per my signature I have had this car since new.

It has an annoying rattle coming from the rear. The best description is that it sounds like pinging...but it's coming from the rear at about 110km/h (~70mph for those metrically declined).

I asked my local dealer to check it out last service, they said the rear seat wasn't up properly...it was and the car rattled on the way home.

About a week later I found this steel pin behind the RHS of the rear seat in the luggage area:

I rarely carry anything in the rear apart from groceries so nfi what it is but it was close enough to the rear of the back seat to make my think it had dropped out of the seat.

Anyone had this issue before?

Wondering if you could sent that pic to the dealer who misdiagnosed the issue and ask them wtf it is...?

Do you still get the rattling with that 'pin' now out of the luggage area?

Good suggestion but with Ratmick's luck, the dealer will probably charge him for the part.

I sent the pic the day I found it to Essendon Hyundai here in Melbourne where I bought the car.

They wanted me to bring it is so they could 'have a look'. The issue with this is two-fold:

1. I don't want waste a day off for them to just misdiagnose the issue again and spend that valuable day stuck in the wasteland where all the Essendon Fields car dealerships are.
2. I don't have any time to spare at the moment, my wife is very ill and I need the car.

...and yeah still get the rattle, although I think it's now worse.

Craig, asking for a friend, what is an antitheft locking pin (what does it do, where does it go)?

When was tow bar fitted?

If noise after fitting wonder if a pin from the fitting kit.

Do they fit via floor under seat or boot area and pin missing or come out of tow bar fitting.

Looks like the pin out of an antitheft device, like a steering lock :undecided:

A google image search, came up with a few similar options, A torana door hinge pin, a composite door hinge pin ( think office doors with oversized exposed aluminium hinges ) or some other things I won't provide search terms for.

Thanks Craig, my friend never thought of an accessory like a steering lock.  :)

I don't use a steering lock and the most common thing in the boot area is groceries.

Presumably the tow bar is mounted from underneath, no idea though as it was done prior to delivery.

My daughter's car (base model of the same car) does not do the same thing (she has no tow-bar and it's auto).

Apologies for the late reply, my wife eventually passed away.

Took the car back to the Dealership last Friday.

They had it for a few hours, and said they found that one of the rear bodywork panel screws/bolts was loose, I think they said the rear spoiler?

Anyway it didn't do it on the way home...but it also didn't do it on the way there so nfi if they've 'fixed' it.

Thanks for all the condolences

@Ratmick
Out of interest. Do you have any explaination about the strange 30mm steel pin you found floating about in the back of the car, that you posted photo of.
Did you ask the Dealer about it?

I gave them the small steel pin and played them the recording of the rattle.

They gave the pin back and said they had no idea...

About a week ago I posted a pic of the pin on Facebook and asked my FB friends in the NSW WRX Club if they could identify it (hoping that the pin might be a generic part rather than Hyundai-specific).

I got no helpful replies.  :fum:

There is a recall on the PD.4 hatch for a cracking part in the tailgate latch, but apparently the part I gave them wasn't part of that.

I don't think it's rattled since so all good, maybe.
