Shell Ultra 5W-40 is good stuff for Diesel or petrol Shell Helix Ultra Engine Oil 5W-40 5 Litre | Supercheap Auto check around for sales as I've seen it for under $50 before.

Penrite is good too, non DPF oil currently on special Penrite HPR 5 Engine Oil 5W-40 5 Litre | Supercheap Auto

While not specifically Diesel related, due to Covid restrictions last year, I went to another independent mechanic compared to my preferred.  They used Valvoline SynPower 5w30 full synthetic.  The engine felt and sounded SO nice and smooth... I was VERY impressed.
I went back to my usual guy earlier this year and he always uses Castrol Edge.  I know it's a well regarded oil, but just didn't have that smooth, quiet sound that I felt with Valvoline.  i wonder if anyone else has tried this.

I've always used Penrite full synthetic enviro 5w-30 and it goes so well. Keep in mind that your climate plays a part in choice as viscosity requirements change. E.g. someone living in Broome, WA will probably use 15w-40 whereas 5w-30 may be more suitable for Canberra or Tassie. In your manual in the specification section is a table with the recommended oil grade 😁

If I was in Broom I'd still recommend a 5 or 10 weight oil, you need that oil to circulate around as fast as possible at start up, older cars that can weep and burn oil would be better off with a heavier weight and viscosity.

A viscosity of 40 or possibly even up to 50 in extreme temperatures would be more suitable.

Personally I use Penrite 5W-30 PAO oil in my own i30 which is fine for Perth temperatures where we can vary between 0 and mid 40's, PAO synthetics are sheer free and handle hotter temperatures than standard full synthetics made with mineral base stock.

The term FULL SYNTHETIC indicates the oil has NO mineral oil component, it is made completely from non mineral oil.

SEMI SYTHETIC on the other hand DOES contain a BLEND of synthetic and mineral oil.

I have used Gulf Western 5W30 full synthetic in a 2012 FD model that has what I would call 'reasonably high (240,000) kilometres' of mainly highway driving, I find it is smooth and runs quietly.

The term Full Synthetic means there is enough Synthetic additive within the oil to be able to claim the term "Full Synthetic", most of the claimed full synthetics on the market are created from mineral base stock and hence they are not true synthetics.

Shell Ultra and Pennzoil Platinum create their synthetic base stock from gas which is a little different to most, Penrite PAO oils are true synthetics as are other brands that use PAO (polyalphaolefins) or Ester, Mobile 1 Ultimate 0W-40 is another true synthetic and there are probably some more brands moving into the true synthetic range nowadays due to their superior structure and stress free protection levels.

If it comes on special I always try to get the Penrite HPR 5 Engine Oil - 5W-40 6 Litre as my i30 takes 5.3L.

Alternatively the Castrol EDGE 5w-30 5L comes on half price quite often.

I've always used Shell Helix Ultra Professional AG 5W-30 in my old 2011 FD diesel and 2015 GD diesel. I also find 5 litre has always been enough to bring the level up to full mark on dipstick. In contrast, I usually find when the dealer does the oil change the level is above the F mark. Is that because they're putting 5.3 litre in?
