Title: EPS & ESP Off lights are on
Post by: Nesher on November 21, 2019, 08:44:43
Hi All and good morning,

First of all, thanks to this great community, I manage to diagnose an issue with my I30 - I had 2 issues that happened
1. The car wouldn't start and with an OBD2 I saw that I had P1690 error
2. The car would start with no revs on the dashboard (I have a HUD which showed revs.. kind funny in that sense)
after reading here several threads, I saw that the issue may occur due to faulty crankshaft location sensor, manage to buy 1 from Korea for less than $30 and install it
:link: OEM Crankshaft Position Sensor for Hyundai (PLZ check your VIN) #391802B000 | eBay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Crankshaft-Position-Sensor-for-Hyundai-PLZ-check-your-VIN-391802B000/222341954258)

This helped solve both issues starting the car! So again, thank you very much!

Second, I'm also having issues with the car, I had the EPS light turned on and the steering wheel got stiff to move (usually when it occurred in the past I used to switching off the car and on again and everything would be fine)... and recently when I did that it didn't help and the steering kept stiff after several restarts
In the Hyundai service garage during winter testing they told me that I had to replace the steering column (around $850-900 deal - if I buy the part from another place it could be half the price)
I went to another garage, they checked with a Foxwell if I had any errors showing (from what I saw, he didn't see any indication of an error- me neither with my OBD device) so he re-calibrated the steering wheel with an advanced Foxwell computer and the problem seemed to go away (didn't charge me a single penny on it)... BUT, I had the ESP Off lit.. tried to turn it on and it didn't work and also the EPS indicator got lit again for good
(https://i.ibb.co/f24pHL9/P-20191120-180031-v-HDR-Auto.jpg) (https://ibb.co/Dt5CQTY)

The Hyundai service asked to come check the car because it's a safety issue.. I went there again and 1 guy told me that I have to replace the steering column.. I asked him if the EPS light could be on because of another issue? he said to talk with diagnostics guy.. who said that it could happen due to other reasons as well (communication and something else.. don't remember exactly what)..  then they said to check with a computer for the issue (for $50-70 which I refuse to pay!!)
I came home after that, disconnected the battery for an hour.. connected it back on but lights were still on and the wheel seems to be okay...

I have a 2010 1.6L petrol I30 (Supreme) with the following info (not my VIN)
 :link: TMADC51DBAJ120467 Hyundai Elantra / Lantra / i30 / Avante 2010 - Free VIN Lookup | Vehicle History Report (https://www.vindecoderz.com/EN/check-lookup/TMADC51DBAJ120467)

Any idea what's going on? what should I do?
I'm about to go to another place to reset the indicators but I don't want to do it just to clear them and not solve the issue!
Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated

Hen

P.S.
I hope I explained myself well, if you have any information missing to help, please let me know and I'll try to provide further information :)

My instincts tell me to replace the column or if you can find a used control module which is not  a spared item you may get lucky . any code with the EPS fault?

I've just gone through having our wagon with EPS lit and sudden loss of power steering. First time, benefit of the doubt, second time cleared codes and did  a SAS reset, third time it was removed and swapped with my spare. Problem resolved

$850 -900 at dealer? What is that for a new or used column? Seems well under what they can be

It's for a used one, parts+labor... around $600 for the part (incl. VAT) and another ~$200 for labor
I can get the part for around $270 for other car yards (both have the same warranty as far I understand)

May be an economic choice then otherwise how much time and money do you invest in fault finding. Normally I'd have a good look and try and fix it or fault find it further but it was the wifes car and last thing I need is a phone call with bad news. I think it scared her and it is very heavy with no assistance, I'd hate to be turning and have it go.

I think our error was loss of comms, but I forget.

This does sound like an SAS sensor failing. Most practical thing is to get another one from a wrecker. If you look at our pages describing the steering column bush failure, you will see the column removal procedure . Old out and new in takes 2.5hrs including bush. If you want to save money its a doable DIY job.
I would change the bush too, while it is out. They are very cheap and usually fail at 80-90,000km.

Hopefully this thread and the links given in it will help you a lot if you decide to fix it yourself and they will help explain the Bush that Gary mentions. It can be hard to find things by searching sometimes.

Thanks for the help, I think this part was replaced back in 2015 when I had the knocking issue (roughly at 70-75K KM)..
I just checked the car with other apps with the OBD2 and I got C1261 fault code
:link: C1261 HYUNDAI Steering Angle Sensor Not Calibrated (https://www.autocodes.com/c1261_hyundai.html)

seems it's the SAS causing the issue, do I still need to replace the entire column or should I just change the steering bush or anything else?
Thanks again and have a great weekend :)

I'm not convinced it's just the angle sensor if the EPS comes on and you loose power steering. Normally bad angle sensor triggers the ESP to turn off only. SO sure you could reset it and see what happens. If there's no knock and it feels normal I don't see a bush required, only you can tell.

Same from me. If no knock then probably bad sensor.

Therefore, you change the column; but, you dont know its history. Was the bush ever changed?
As I said, for a shekel and a few extra minutes you solve a future problem.

I had to google shekel..  :crazy2:

I thought they were more like 25 shekel (still not a lot though)

I no longer have lose of steering, only EPS and ESP off are lit and that is it... I'm pretty sure they replaced the bush cause I did have the knocking issue and it was solved
My gut feeling it's probably just a bad sensor, perhaps just replace it (if possible) and a reset to the computer will straight things up

angle sensor is not replaceable. So are you saying the EPS (red) is lit and you still have assistance?

Yep, as shown in the picture above
I saw the sensor is purchasable and I believe this is the right one for my car

I'm not sure where you're getting your information from but that part is not fitted to any i30 or Elantra ofr any generation for that matter.

100% the steering angle sensor in integrated into the column and if it fails it's game over. Replace the column

should be enough info here for you.

I would try recalibrating the steering angle and if it fails again I'd be looking at the column replacement , that's all I can suggest

After 2 days with the re-calibration, it seems the lights are off and everything is okay!
Hope it will stay that way.. :)

Hope it goes well.

For us we got a week or 2 and the loss of steering  happened again . I forget if I gave it 2 or 3 chances but it was clear to me it was going to continue randomly which was an unacceptable risk for the Mrs.

I'm suffering with the same problems as Nesher. I had the steering angle sensor reset by my auto electrician mate, at least that was free, Hyundai wanted £68! The expected eps and esp faults showed up on his diagnostic computer which we managed to clear. I'm not driving the car at the moment, our friends who have just emigrated are borrowing it as it was a spare car and I was just about to sell it. Unfortunately about 10 days later the problem returned  :blubber:

Is my only option now a new steering column? I've read £1500 from Hyundai plus a few (3-4?) hours labour. Anyone know where is best to buy a recon unit in the UK or is it just a scrapyard job and hope it works once fitted?

UPDATE: I just bought a brand new power steering column on Ebay for £225! I'm happy with that.

Thanks, Keith.

Wow! Please keep us posted if it fixes the issue.. was it a one of item or did they have multiples? If multiples, have you got a link please?
