Title: Apple carplay playback clicking noise.
Post by: aanastasiou4 on June 17, 2018, 11:50:05
Hello! Anyone retrofitted the gd-03 headunit in your i30 GD probably are facing clicking noises coming from speakers when you are playing a song from your iPhone on apple carplay. I have an iPhone X and I also used an SE and a 6 plus to check if my phone was the problem. It wasn’t. Yesterday I found my 5S and plugged it on the car to check if the problem was present. I pressed the play button and surprise surprise there were no clicking noises what so ever, just clear music. So, the problem is on the phone’s software and not the headunit’s. Please tell me if anyone found a solution for the current iOS version!

I'm finding it only happens with some songs, currently narrowed it down to songs that are 192kbps and over that I've downloaded from YouTube, doesn't seem to happen on any CD copied music.

My songs are all downloaded from Apple music. When I switch apple carplay off from the phone, the radio recognises the phone as an iPod and the sound is perfect.

What do you mean by switching off Car Play from the phone? the only way I see to switch off is to choose "forget this vehicle" but it will automatically re-instate Car Play if still plugged in, at no stage do I see it change to iPod

Music over Bluetooth is perfect though.

If you go to settings> general> restrictions you can turn apple carplay off. Try it!

I've never enabled restrictions before so I just learnt something new :hatoff:

Yeah songs play fine that way for me as well  I cant find this same problem anywhere on the net so I might have to look into reporting an issue with Apple I think...if I can work out how :undecided:

Pretty poor of them not to have escalated the issue and not have returned calls :disapp:

Support were spot on time for my callback, just spent 50 minutes on the phone with Apples senior technical engineering support (Chris) who is personally going to handle this case, confirmed it definitely seems like a Apple software issue going by the fault finding we've already performed so I'm expecting a further call from technical engineering on Thursday.

The squeaky wheels are turning :)

Will do :goodjob2:

Can you tell me what software update you were running on all iOS devices you tested with 5S - 6 - X, I'm running the latest 11.4 on my 7+ though earlier updates still had this problem for me.

X iOS 11.4
6 plus iOS 11.4
SE iOS 11.4
5S iOS 11.0.3 (the problem does not occur on this version of iOS at least on the 5S)

I don’t know about earlier versions since there’s been about 2 months I retrofitted the GD-03 headunit so I can’t tell!

@aanastasiou4  Thanks for that, is 11.0.3 the latest for 5S ? and have you had a chance to test in another brand vehicle ?

The 5S had a software update notification but I did’t updated it. I haven’t got the chance to test another car since I don’t know any other people with carplay in their cars!

Thanks, that will give me a bit more information for them to fault find :goodjob: be interesting to know if the 5S shows the fault after updating, then we could pin it down to a more recent software issue.

Apple are on the ball and keen to deal with this issue, already had another call back from Chris today to confirm head unit model/maker and software version, cable brands-length used/tested.

I mentioned the option of maybe being able to install the previous head unit software but Chris said not necessary as they're pretty sure it's a phone software issue due to the music plays fine when detected as iPod.

Also updated their information that software version 11.0.3 doesn't produce the issue and that an upgrade will be performed on the 5S to help confirm a difference in the software changes.

Chris mentioned not many users ever report these problems so they are very appreciative of the troubleshooting tasks performed and asked me to thank @aanastasiou4  for your amazing efforts  :hatoff:

Had a very testing afternoon, took 4 hours total to get some video recordings sent to Apple and what a pain it was :head_knock: recordings were supposed to be done via my phone and uploaded directly via the link they sent, the only issue with that is once you open the camera the Carplay audio will disable :disapp: so had to use a borrowed phone to record what I was doing with my phone.

The next roadblock came when trying to upload to the Apple support site that isn't compatible with my Edge browser so I installed Firefox portable on a thumb drive to upload with but guess what...Firefox portable wont access Outlook as it reckons Outlook is an insecure site (starting to get pissed off now), so I install the normal Firefox Browser thinking it's just an issue with the portable version, nope! normal Firefox gave me the same response (getting really pissed off now), so over to Opera I go and install that and yippy it works :happydance:

Then it took a further 2 hours to upload 200Mb on my crappy ADSL :disapp: cant wait till we get NBN, they've run the cable to the curb at least so just waiting for it to be hooked up now which is reported to be January

January is when my NBN internet is supposed to be connected, not related to our Apple Car Play issue which is hopefully fixed alot earlier than that :fingers:

Not as yet, another apple tech (Andrew) contacted me yesterday to ask if I could re-upload my videos to them as apparently the first lot were corrupted, I'm expecting Chris to touch base with me on Monday and tell me the videos are still corrupted  I'm guessing their Apple based extraction software isn't compatible with Windows zip files, or the Apple Support "Gigafiles" upload site is a piece of crap  :head_butt:

Our helpful support tech Chris is off sick at the moment so a different person ( Shari Scholes Miller ) calls me this morning and wants to know what testing we've done and what devices were used and which software was being run and have you uploaded any videos of the problem to Apple :head_butt: told her to go back and read all information already supplied to Chris which Andrew (another tech) had no problem familiarising himself with before calling me, how do some of these people get jobs when they're so fxxxing stupid

Her answer for our issue was to wait and see if the problem still shows up in the next software update and if apparent then contact them to report :head_knock: I'm currently writing a report to Chris to report what a waste of space this idiot Shari has been and they should be ashamed to have someone like her representing their tech support who basically just fob's people off because she obviously cant be bothered :disapp:

Don't worry, she's just a temp in the middle expected to take up the slack when real help is unavailable, my complaint to senior staff about her lack of competency to familiarise herself with the subject prior to contacting me, then to go on and say "oh! if it happens again please report it to us"  WTF :head_butt: we wont be dealing with her again :utterrubbish:

@aanastasiou4  I forwarded an email to Shari on the 11th explaining my disappointment with them/her and to inform them there was no change in the latest update, she contacted me via phone the following day and she'll present the information to the support engineers again  Shari is now handling the case as Chris is very ill ( could be terminal :( )

I made it quite clear that their support effort was lacking and that a couple of amateurs have been able to diagnose and compile all this information for them yet their engineers don't seem to have a clue...hopefully that encourages her to push a bit harder on these engineers :Good_luck:

I had to do a trip over to our local Apple Store today to get a video uploaded to Shari (support) that I'd made of the head unit doing the clicking sound, for some reason their giga upload site kept failing to accept the larger video from my computer with numerus attempts of different browsers, their engineers refused to progress any further until they had received video evidence of the problem :disapp: after this I explained that the noise is barely noticeable in the recording and they would get much better results getting off their arses from behind some desk and do some actual practical testing themselves :head_butt:

Also mentioned that if they fail to hear the noise/static in music it is much more noticeable having Siri read back received phone messages via carplay

The best way is for them to have a person sit in the car and experience the problem themselves! Its like having a mechanical problem with the car. The mechanic will test the car in real time and identify the problem!

There doesn't seem to be anyone else who has complained of this issue except for the two of us on this forum, whether it's only related to Hyundai head units across the board or specifically our unit model or other brands we don't know as no one else has reported it and it might be difficult for Apple to obtain the exact model we have that is showing the issue.

I did offer for Apple to send a tech out and test my car in person but they don't provide that option

I agree and so do Apple though chances of them verifying the problem due to lack of other instances is going to be very slim.

If it is only due to a retrofit issue then you can guarantee they won’t fix ( that’s why the retrofit has not been mentioned  :whistler: ) though I don’t think that is the problem or else there would still be issues in iPod format.

Hopefully our crackling issue is fixed in next weeks iOS12 update :fingers: the 11.4 update was supposed to fix it but didn't  :disapp:

I've also noticed hundreds of reports ( google Apple Car Play crackling ) on numerous websites like Reddit - Whirlpool and Apple discussion threads  :link: Crackle and Pop using CarPlay - Apple Community (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8370078) now reporting the problem with factory and 3rd party units in multiple vehicle brands which gives us much more evidence to back our claims, I've asked Shari for a response on the matter though not heard anything yet.
