"A Golf GTI weighs less but costs more and can’t touch the Hyundai’s power, while the Focus ST is comparable on most metrics but struggles to lay its power down. Everything else that’s in the same performance ballpark, like the 308 GTi, Civic Type R and Mini John Cooper Works, are priced well above the i30 N. To call it a performance bargain is a heinous understatement.

Oh, and did we mention that the i30 N carries the same five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty as every other Hyundai – and that the company will still honour it even if you take it to the occasional track day? For a performance car, that’s an incredible declaration of confidence."

This thing is gaining some seriously good reviews.

I've been having a serious discussion with myself about this car. Reports are it's the new alpha in the pack of performance hatches. The Civic is faster over short distances in a straight line but the i30N is untouchable elsewhere.

Which is great if you want to drive like that. Sadly this is a thing frowned upon by plod on regular roads... and I've not been to a track in years. Checking, I still have a pulse...

So whats it good for then? That's the bit I'm struggling with. The GTi is allegedly a better day to day proposition than the N owing to less snap crackle and pop and a more compliant ride. And I have a perfectly fine i30 that meets my commuting needs. It's reliable, quiet, super economical. The N for all its clever engineering and ability lacks something that makes it a compelling proposition in my case which is a little disturbing.

I have no doubt that when I take it for a spin all will be revealed - but will I buy one?

I'm in the same position as you you Keith. If I had a $1 for every person who has suggested I "should" buy an N then I wouldn't have to touch my bank account to get one...

However, I don't think I would get much more joy out of it than my SR. I've been getting a bit naughty with the throttle lately when I pass cars.. hopefully only Hyundai knows how many times I've seen 140kph...

I'd enjoy those crackles and pops you mentioned but even the SR is bordering on a harsh ride on longer trips and the N would make me frown at the gas station. I'm guessing the range on a tank would be less too.  :undecided:

G'day Keith,

Fitzgibbon's on the North Side isn't it? I'm way out west in Bellbowrie, but when my N arrives I'd be happy to drop by on my way for a spin around Mt Glorious and even throw you the keys for a bit if you wanted to have a crack.

I think it's the other way around. 3k for the luxury pack and 2k for the Sun roof...

As I've said before, "Shut up and take my money!!"

The lease on my current wheels runs out at the end of the year, and the i30N is definitely on the radar as the new Chubby Chariot.
