Title: Remote audio controls doing weird things
Post by: spin on May 30, 2018, 13:12:34
Hi, I have a 2013 i30 Premium auto. My audio remote controls on the steering wheel are doing odd things now and then. The mute control sometimes turns the volume down and the remote volume control will only turn the volume down when pressing up or down. The only way to get volume up again is with the volume control on the head unit. Has anyone had this weird problem? Spin.

I believe this all works through resistance. Different resistance per button.

A friend of mine had his go batty in a similar way due to moisture ingress messing up the resistance.... Could anything like this have happened to you?

hopefully you have warranty but could be the clockspring in the steering wheel. I've had something similar to that happen with both radio and cruise functions being erratic in a FD, Replacing clockspring fixed it

Thanks everyone. Unlikely to be moisture as there has not been water etc. in or on the controls that I know of. It is out of warranty as well unfortunately. The problem is intermittent and random. I will check all plug connections this weekend and give an update next week. Spin

HI

May I ask, was it the clock spring. I have the same issue. Thanks!

@RedCari30  Remove steering wheel airbag. There should be enough cable to get it out of the way and hold it with one hand,  Disconnect the  wiring connector from the clock spring, inspect for any evidence of corrosion, if you have any electrical contact cleaner you could give a squirt on both connections. reseat connector and test.

Or simply unplug and reseat several times to clean up the contacts. Then test.

I just had this myself and it was dirty connections, also originally I thought clock spring but I have since re-used a suspect one and it has worked perfectly in another vehicle so my conclusion at this point is clock spring likely ok, dirty connections.

Avoid powering the vehicle up if airbag is disconnected, it will throw a code. I've heard this clears once it's back in but in some vehicles an airbag code locks and can only be cleared by diagnostic tools, just saying this as a precaution, easier to play safe.

let us know how you go. airbag is held in by torx bolts on the FD series, not sure if GD is the same. maybe gary @nzenigma can enlighten us if he's not having a big Party today

Hi

sorry for the delay. Hyundai paid for the clock spring and I paid $80 for the labour as the car was recently out of warranty  and had always been dealer serviced. a fair outcome. I seem to recall that some googling showed there have been clock spring issues.

As I often find, something that was a formal campaign in the US is treated differently (worse) here. they seem to have much better regulators (NHTSA | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) who capture this data from consumers and make the car companies address issues if lots are having it.

still, this time Hyundai Australia did ok.

good feedback.
My issue with the i40 keeps coming back and heat seems to play a part also. I think I'll be up for a clockspring too.

Damn, my car has just started to do this too.  The volumes, up and down, and mode buttons all do random stuff.  I just noticed it this morning, it was foggy and cold but car was kept in garage.

How much does a clock spring cost to get replaced in Victoria/Australia?  Is it something i can do myself or should i go to dealer for legitimate part and install?

You could start by getting a quote from the dealer, then go from there. Find out what the part number is and see if it's 93490-1W110

You could get it on Ebay from Koraps for about $75 delivered then find a competent mechanic to replace it which will involve removing the airbag and steering wheel.

There appears to be a lot of non - genuine copies out there, I'd get OEM for that item. I've used Koraps several times .

strangely enough my controls have been working on and off lately, mostly not working.  i think its related to the cooler weather.  would this still be the clockspring or something related to the battery? no issues starting car so far.

I'd also be blaming clockspring before battery. You'd most likely notice sluggish performance out of things like fans and dim lights if battery were to blame.
