Title: Replace Door Lock Actuator
Post by: jonnyplantpot on June 12, 2018, 21:24:58
Hello,
We have a 2010 i30 Comfort Hatchback (UK).
The drivers door lock has just started to make a unhealthy loud grinding noise, a bit like a gear box crunching, when it locks.
After much interweb cruising we've concluded this is probably the actuator starting to fail.
So, more interweb crusing, led us to this really useful page  :link: How do I remove the inner door skin? (https://www.i30ownersclub.com/forum/index.php?topic=23897.msg393667#msg393667) which told us how to get the inside off the door.

A couple of evenings later we can now take the silver panel off the inside of the door, almost. (On the plus side we now know how to replace the window if it gets broken).

So, as seems to be the way things go when I embark on these jobs, I find I have a couple of questions and a hope that someone out there can provide the answers....
1) There are two green cables that go from the interior door handle to the actuator (I think). The link above implies they just unclip, but I can't see how to do it.  I'm not even clear if they unclip from the handle end or the other end (inside the door). Can someone point me to / provide a quick explanation of that? I'm assuming that these cables are then fed through the door somehow
2) How do I then get the actuator off, once the panel is out the way (haven't totally taken the panel off yet)? I haven't managed to find any instructions on this yet.
3) Is this a fairly generic part or are they all slightly different? If I find a scrap / ebay one that's close, will that be good enough or is it going to be a swine to find without going to Hyundai?
Thanks for the help.
Jon

Green cables? If they're the ones I think you mean which are black on my cars, like one is the inner handle the other is the lock snib cables that go back to the locka assembly?

assuming you've unscrewed the inner handle assembly off the door and these are attached to that.

The outer body clips into and is retained in the the handle assembly so they just carefully unclip ou of that and then the cable itself if you rotate that around until you see a slot which will then allow cable to be slid vertically out of that.

Outer door handle will need to be removed, electrical connector disconnected internally from the actuator and the bolts in the the door end that secure the lock

Hopefully there's a white sticker with the part number, then look at drivers side locks from FD series and fit the same number, that's the safest way

You're going to have to check part number there's several versions listed, not all have the deadlock feature which is possibly the part that's grinding. I had a rear door do something similar, still locked but it's like a 2 stage lock and the 2nd stage sounded like stripped gears grinding.

>Green cables? If they're the ones...

Yes that's the cables, and yes we've unscrewed the internal handle.
I think the thing we've not realised is that we'll have to take the outer handle off too; i.e the whole lock mechanism is coming out.

>You're going to have to check part number there's several versions listed...
Ok. Thanks. Guess I'm not going to be able to short cut around that then.  :)

That part diagram is very useful. I'll ring Hyundai today and find out how much this part is new.

Thanks for the info. We'll give that a go and see how far we get..

Hi,
We're making steady (slow) progress. We're waiting to find a part that doesn't cost £200+, think we've found a scrap yard with one, but they don't open it'll tomorrow. Anyway...

A thought has just occurred. If we replace the actuator & lock assembly, do we have to get the keys reprogrammed or something like that?
I suspect the answer is no you don't because the lock assembly is a mechanical thing, and the keys interact with the computer, which isn't changing.
Thanks, Jon

Hi
Think we’re almost there....
If anyone  is trying this , this is also useful....

Having trouble getting the power connector to stay on. It’s like it’s not pushing on far enough for the clip to lock in5o place
We’ve pushed the orange seal in as far as we can, but reading the other post again, I don’t think that’s right. Does that sound plausible? Going to have another look in a while but and see if can make it sit better. At the m9ment some electrical tape is holding it in place, which isn’t brilliant.

The answer to that was... no it shouldn’t go in that far.
Pulled it up the connector a little bit, before putting the connector into the socket. Snapped into place straight away. And the door locks don’t go nuts when you put the key in the ignition.
Anyway, thanks for the help everyone.
