Title: Resetting ECU, Eco Mode On or Off?
Post by: DaveK92 on March 10, 2017, 16:54:50
Hi all,

I recently discovered the 2015 i30 automatic that my mam got the end of last year isn't a 7 speed DCT. I'm pretty annoyed because the 2015 is supposed to be DCT and the torque converter autos are known for having crap MPG, she traded in her 2013 because she was convinced it was cursed because people kept driving into it when it was parked resulting in several expensive repairs and because the fuel economy was crap. I've heard a number of people here saying automatics learn your driving style and that they have had success with better mileage after disconnecting the battery and having the ECU reset.

My question is, should I leave Eco mode on or off? I normally drive with it on and get around 37mpg at about 75% urban, 25% highway. Tyres are at 40psi (15", 1.6CRDI) and I drive as smoothly as I can. I'm hoping this will help because the economy is terrible. Which is a shame because it's a very nice car. I recently got my full licence so I've started driving the car and paying for diesel.

I'd love to get MPG into the 40s if possible.  My commute to work is 20 minutes each way and I do occasional 45 minute drives. I know diesel's aren't great for short commutes but I don't know anyone else driving similar distances who have had issues with MPG on other diesel's driving short distances.

We're just coming out of winter so hopefully no more 3-4C mornings so the warmer weather should help economy? At least I think so...

She's thinking of getting an Ioniq hybrid, Auris hybrid or Prius hybrid next year due to running costs. It would be nice to not be getting the same mileage as a Ford Mustang!

Sorry to hear that Dave,

To be honest, the general consensus is that Eco mode on most cars (including the i30) makes very little difference, so doubt it will give you the 10% extra you are looking for.

Warmer weather + eco mode might nearly get you there (plus a few more miles on the motor)

Yes, the Ioniq should be great. My Brother has a top of the Range 2015? Prius Itech but it has a small boot and firm ride. I think the Ioniq and Kia Niro will be better and obviously have a much better warranty than the Prius.

Those mpg numbers are terrible albeit mine is manual and 2015. I get 45.6 mpg in 95% traffic in London.
