Glow Plug issue?

Can you believe it, just had the car have its 60,000km service at the dealership. Don't get me started but have reason to believe they are very unscrupulous. Tell you things are wrong with the car but you but strongly suspect they are just making things up.

Anyway, very next day, cold start, the car rumbled like it's never done before. Idled very roughly, car shaking. As soon as given revs ok and once warmed started fine again

I thought I hadn't left enough time for the glow plugs to warm up, but today left it a good 10 seconds and car started the same way. Moderate but not a heap of white smoke behind the car which never happens previously.

OBDII scanner shows no fault codes.

Is this likely to be glow plug related?

Should the scanner show fault codes if there are glow plug issues?

Video the problem and tell them to stuff their fault codes.

If necessary get them to start the car from cold, leave it there overnight.

Had a similar problem, turned out to be faulty injectors, fixed under warranty, with no arguments, many $$$.

I will video. This is my OBDII scanner by the way. Only 2 days since service. Maybe theirs is more sophisticated. Could they have stuffed something during the service?

If it was the injectors wouldn't it affect general driving?

The injector problem we had was only evident at start up. I thought it was a glow plug issue. Having said that, 95% of cases ARE glow plug issues, let's not assume the worst.

It does seem very coincidental so soon after a service. Could be the glow plug fuse blown due to mis-connection or accidental short during service. They should be made to video all their actions so you see nothing adverse happened. Good luck with it.

The i30 Service Schedule for 60,000k @ item 32 says "Fuel System Treatment perform". I believe they do this by adding Hyundai Injector cleaner to the fuel tank. Could this cause the problem.

Sorry to hear that con.. very frustrating. Get back on to them straight away and tell them it happened immediately after the service. Push for a no cost warranty fix!  :crazy1:

I've just woken up so this might be a brainfart of a suggestion, but didn't we recently experience something similar after a members service, where a connector had been left dangling near the oil filter. Simply reconnecting it cured the problem...?

I'll have a look for the post later, to see if it's the same issue.

Unfortunately without pics guiding me as to what to check, no chance. I don't know where the oil filter is. Isn't it underneath the car, not visible from the bonnet?

Should be ok, but I'd get them to rectify it. I wouldn't have thought that would cause your problem, but I'm no expert...

If you're measuring after an overnight stand, it can read high. This is because the oil in the engine and filter, has drained back into the sump. The filter takes about 300ml IIRC. I vaguely remember a mention that the engine can sense oil overfill and if so, cuts the engine completely. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.  :confused:

Dealer has had a look. Says there was a retained code and they think there is an issue with the mass airflow meter / sensor. Does this help control the amount of air to inject into the combustion chamber?

Anyway, to me doesn't explain why I had rough idling and white smoke only on startup and the car would run fine once I had driven off.

Dealer has had a look. Says there was a retained code and they think there is an issue with the mass airflow meter / sensor.

Are they replacing it?

Yes booked in next week. Glad to have warranty. Nervous about it running out in a year. But to be honest the rough idling and smoke have gotten better in the last 2-3 days and the car currently feels normal.

Great.

I felt nervous too. I mitigated any year 5 issues by booking my car in for last dealer service a couple of weeks before the warranty ended, and that picked up a number of items that were done under the warranty without question.

Airflow meter/sensor changed by dealer and my goodness, car feels like new again. Has new zip and the turbo lag I'd gotten used to going up a hill when the engine was cold is gone. Don't know how long it might not have been working at its best now.

That would be standard engine code - a £10 ELM327 would read that.

It likely would have been one of these:

P0101 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance
P0102 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input
P0103 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit High Input

I wonder if he looked in pending codes, my ELM and scanguage both can pull those.
