Title: i30 2010 1.6l petrol manual stalls in neutral intermittently
Post by: Netty on March 29, 2019, 02:13:52
Hi everyone,
Newby here seeking some help please.  We have a 2010 1.6l petrol manual i30 that we have owned from new and has served us faithfully and well.  However about 3 weeks ago it started stalling intermittently when stopped in neutral or with the clutch depressed.  We took it to the dealership mechanic who said we needed a new clutch (ouch!) which we accepted and got the work completed.  However, during the 2nd drive after getting the car back, the same problem arose.  We took it back again, but they can't replicate the problem.  The car will restart after it has stalled but the ESP light will come on, the revs will be right down and it doesn't drive right.  We stop the engine and restart it and all returns to normal.  We are now keeping a log of when it happens and what the circumstances are in an attempt to get more information so they can diagnose it.  We are reaching out for help as we don't know anything about mechanics and we haven't been able to get any answers from the dealership.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions you may have.

EDIT - I have attached a picture of the dash after it had stalled and I restarted.  In first gear, 25km/hr and rev dial doesn't move.  ESP is on but you can't see it because of the sunlight.

Sounds like yet another Dickhead dealership service department. Did they actually say that the cause was the clutch and  to rectify the "stalling " issue a new clutch would be needed ? Or did they just say, your clutch is worn you need a new one?

Clearly a clutch or even a defective one is not going to stall the engine if the box is in neutral or depressed for that matter.

The ESP light is likely the clue. I'd be checking the clutch pedal switches out of curiosity, they would be part of the signals or inputs the ESP system would monitor. There have been reports from members with  ESP / perfomance/ engine limiting issues with defective switches being the cause in some instances.

Also these cars have had Brake switch faults too which were causing ESP OFF to illuminate, was a recall, free fix. And We have heard of bad ECUs  as well. If the ESP light is on indicating a fault then a scan for codes may help.

All random thoughts

Thanks for your ideas TW2005.  When it first started happening, we thought it was only happening when the clutch was depressed and that is what we told the dealership.  They did their diagnostics and then said it was the clutch.  The parts had to be ordered and so there was a week between that diagnosis and when the car was booked to have the clutch replaced.  In that time, it then stalled when in neutral.  We phoned and told them this in case it changed the outcome, but they said the clutch still needed replacing.
We have always serviced at the dealership so I would hope that any recalls should have been attended to (or am I assuming too much
How would one go about checking the clutch pedal switches?
Thanks

@tw2005  has called them dickheads, but I would suggest that even the most stupid mechanic would know that the clutch is not going to affect the car in this way.
The only conclusion one can draw from this is that your dealer has acted fraudulently. It would be nice to threaten legal action and watch the management scramble.

This could be as simple as an intermittent electrical connection ( +ve or earth) to the ECU or related units. Whenever the battery power is lost, the ESP light will come on when it is restored.

The clutch switch is not going to act in this way.

The symptoms also are that of low or no fuel pressure. However, ESP would not come on . Im assuming that it stays on when you are driving , is that correct????????

We have always serviced at the dealership

Unfortunately, people keep doing that, and they get burnt,

Please find an experienced independent mechanic.

It would involve finding it, working  out the pin outs and oprating the switch whilst using a multimeter to check correct operation and continuity. Or a factory level diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port would see what that switch is reporting to the system , that is whether it's on/off or open / closed contacts etc .

Sorry I've had a late night and a bit brain dead today plus I've got stuff on today otherwise I'd dig up better info.

I guess you're not around my neck of the woods?

:Pout: I thought the clutch switch was worth checking only because of some of the reports we've had from the UK. anyway, very hard in this situation , a high level scanner would be helpful.

Thanks nzenigma,

Yes, the ESP light remains on whilst driving and the Rev meter does not move off zero until we turn off the engine and then turn it back on again.  Then the ESP light goes off and everything returns to normal......until it stalls again....

I feel like personally suing the dealer.  :argh:

Sound like the crank sensor issue, if the revs not doing anything and stays at 0. But it could be connector or wires to the sensor, or from connector to the ECU. It need good diagnostician to look at it. Do not start changing parts until you know the cause.
Personally I would go back to dealer and tell them to refund, or face legal action.
Unfortunately, now is the standard at the dealers, not to diagnose, only start changing parts. There was a post on Facebook from Scanner Danner about official Honda dealer repair flowchart - worth looking at.

@nzenigma  I found this, not sure how reliable the source is though  :whistler:

@Netty  As my brain cleared this morning I was more convinced that you  COULD have a crank sensor problem.
Thanks to @tw2005 we now know it was the Irish issue we worked on.  :goodjob2: Thanks mate.

Just using KISS theory at this stage:

1. No RPM reading = crank sensor.

2. ESP light on until new start = loss of battery power.

3. Clutch experience = NEVER get ANY dealer to repair ANY car. :spitty:

Hi there.

I'm happy I can help with this issue. I have the same car as you and I had the same problem for 6 weeks. I had every symptom you are experiencing.

It was the same with my car. Stall every now and again. Hard starting. Loss of rev counter on restart. ESP light would illuminate.

It actually got so bad in the end, my car wouldn't start more than it would. Complete loss of rev counter and a terrible misfire. Mine was even cutting out at 70mph on the motorway! That was the final straw.

It was the crankshaft sensor. I replaced it myself. One plug, one bolt and a flathead screwdriver to prise it out.

Ever since it has been replaced, it's been completely fine. Not one stall.

Hope this helps!

Phil_C - thanks cannot fully express what I am feeling about your post!  It has given me hope that we might be able to get a resolution to the problem.  So again thank you to all who commented and help put some ideas forward and thank you for sharing your success which I hope will also be ours.

Sincerely
A very grateful i30 owner
